The String Family

Hello Kindergarten + 1st Grade!

This week we are continuing our multi-week exploration into instruments and the 4 families they are organized into. Instruments are any objects that make sound - and are grouped into families based on the way they create sounds. The string family makes sounds in 2 ways - plucked and bowed.

I challenge you to find ways to make a plucked string instrument this week. Please don't forget to share on our Kindergarten and 1st Grade bulletin boards! I would love to see your work.

This instrument family surrounds us! See if you can build a percussion instrument that is hit, shaken, or scraped using the objects in your house and share on our Kindergarten bulletin board!I would love to see your work. There are also YouTube videos of other homemade instruments that you can watch for inspiration.

Max Found Two Sticks, By Brian Pinkney

This week you will hear the story of Max, a young musician who starts to hear rhythms all around him when he finds two sticks. Tapping the rhythms of rain against the rhythms, a rumbling train, and even of pigeons flapping their wings - Max explores the rhythms that make up our world.

Enjoy!

WEEk of DECEMBER 7 - 11

This week we will review ta and rest, and learn a game to play along with our song Bow Wow Wow. When you are done, you will create your own rhythm using the Fur-Cussion activity. Notice how when you click on an animal to make it rest - it stops making noise!

Enjoy!

WEEk of November 30 - December 4

This week we will review ta and rest, connecting them to the words we use and hear everyday. Our music notes ta and rest are combined into patterns called rhythms. Once you have finished watching the introduction video, you will create your own rhythm using the Chrome Music Lab Rhythm Maker.

Enjoy!

Once you have completed the video activity, you will create your own melody using the website below. Notice how you can change the pitch and tempo. Do you like high or low pitches? Fast or slow tempos?
