Criticality in Math Instruction: How will my instruction engage students’ thinking about power and equity and the disruption of oppression?

Students develop the ability to understand power, equity, and anti-oppression

Students are empowered to raise questions and to think critically of the mathematical information they receive

Students use math as a tool to become active change agents to stand up to exclusion, prejudice, and injustice

Bring in students' existing funds of knowledge (culture, contexts, language, and experiences).
Center content understanding around student questions, diverse thinking, misconceptions, and alternative strategies
Enhance students’ mathematical agency by including regular collaborative opportunities for students to work together with others as a team
Teach students of color about the career and financial opportunities in math and STEM fields.
Encourage them to disrupt the disproportionate push-out of people of color in those fields.
Invite leaders and innovators of color working in STEAM fields to meet your students.
