After School Studio Arts Program for Philadelphia High School Students
Since 1994, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts has been reaching out to 9th - through 12th-grade students in over 30 artistically underserved Philadelphia public and Parochial schools through the Academy’s After School Studio Arts Program. The program provides a solid footing in studio art for high school students who have little or no access to an art program. All classes and materials are provided to students free of charge, thanks to the generous support of corporate and private donors.
The After School Program has a mission of creating outreach to the youth of Philadelphia and providing them access to America’s oldest art school and museum. Enrichment, encouragement and skill development are major goals of the program, as well as portfolio development for young artists. The after school program is designed to be a support to school teachers in their educational missions as well as an enriching experience for high school students, especially underserved populations.
● Tuition and materials are all free of charge.
● No prerequisites or prior experience is needed to enter a class.
● Students may take one, two, three, or all four classes.
● Weekly attendance is required, student schedules permitting.
● Enrollment is for one semester, with automatic free enrollment for the second semester.
● Portfolio development is a prime goal of each class, though not a requirement
The program is structured around two 14-week semesters. Faculty and Academy Graduate Students lead the classes. The students, who come from a variety of ethnic and socio-economical backgrounds, are invited to participate by their schools, and choices are made based on artistic talent and potential for enrichment.

Slought Foundation (slought.org) is a non-profit organization on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania that engages publics in dialogue about cultural and socio-political change in Philadelphia, the world, and the cloud. We are a new form of institution that builds relationships and social trust through collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Over the last five years we have developed programming for young adults that sits at the intersection of social activism and cultural production.
This year, we have developed a new after school program that seeks to create a connection between art, cultural institutions and our communities. Each week we will explore what artworks, objects and institutions teach us about the society in which we live. Students will engage in discussions about the role of cultural institutions and how they integrate with the needs of the community at large by looking at modes of accessibility, representation, social justice, community development, and public health. Participants will also be introduced to Philadelphia’s many arts and social advocacy organizations, and will develop a professional network of individuals and institutional contacts.
The after school program meets weekly during the 2017-2018 school year and accommodates up to ten participants from local high schools. On Mondays, we meet from 4-5:30pm at Slought on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. On Wednesdays, we meet from 4-5:30pm offsite and visit local cultural institutions. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the Philadelphia Museum of art.
We are looking for students that have an interest in art, museums, and social activism, but also students that have never visited a museum or with little art or art historical background. We are seeking to engage a diverse audience with the hopes of breaking down the hierarchical structures associated with art museums and demoting the perceived necessity for “understanding” art in order to enjoy navigating cultural institutions. In our research we have found that visiting an art museum exposes students to a diversity of ideas that challenge them with different perspectives on the human condition. Students that have visited museums demonstrated stronger critical thinking skills and displayed higher levels of social tolerance.
We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. Applications can be filled out here: https://slought.org/engage/youth_program_application.
Details about the After School program can be found here: http://healthecologieslab.org/initiatives/after-school-program-at-slought including the syllabus, information on each of our site visits, and brief descriptions of documents that put our discussions into context.
I hope that you will pass this on to your staff and students. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to Anastasia Colzie at acolzie@sloughtfoundation.org.
