5th Grade FACS is an introduction to the subject. Students learn how to read a measuring tape or ruler, how to use a sewing machine, basic nutrition, and kitchen safety. Projects include a pillow with a removable cover, smoothies, mini biscuit pizzas, and dirt pudding.
September 14-18: This week we are working on some nutrition instruction. Students will learn how to use the MyPlate model, then we will take a closer look at each of the food groups represented and what kinds of nutrients we're getting from each one.Â
September 8-11: Students will be finishing their sewing projects. Any unfinished projects by the end of the week will need to be finished during Homebase.
August 31-September 4: Students are beginning sewing projects this week. Monday is a demonstration and organization day. Tuesday will be the first sewing day.
August 24-28: This week is the introduction to the sewing machine. There will be a quiz over sewing machine parts and safety rules on the 28th. Students will be learning parts of the sewing machine, how to stitch in straight lines, and we'll get a start on threading.
August 17-21: We will be continuing/finishing linear measurement. Quiz August 21
August 11-14: This week we will be doing introductions, then starting on linear measurements. All work will be done in class. If families want to practice outside of class, have your student measure something with a ruler or measuring tape then report what they find. You can check their work and give them feedback from there.
