Integrated Math 2 Honors is the second course in the Integrated Math series, and it covers material from the second half of a traditional Algebra 1 course, as well as material from Geometry, Statistics, and some material from Integrated Math 3. We will use the Big Ideas textbook and Journal throughout the year. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to enroll in Integrated Math 3; students who excel in the course should consider enrolling in Integrated Math 3 Honors.
IM2 Honors is a rigorous, honors level course. Students need a strong foundation in math as well as good work habits in order to be successful. I do not recommend this course for any student who earned less than an A in IM1. An honors class is not about memorizing procedures. Instead, emphasis will be placed on conceptual understanding and practical application of the curriculum. In order to cover a broader range of topics and to dig deeper into the material, we will move at a faster pace. I expect that students have mastered the material from IM1; I will not spend class time on review. In addition, students should expect to spend at least 45-60 minutes on homework assignments each night.
Students are expected to log in, with video, daily for our online classes. The chat feature will be enabled, allowing students to ask questions and provide feedback to me during class. Inappropriate comments on this forum will not be tolerated. Students are expected to treat one another with respect and make a consistent, honest effort each day.
In my classroom, there is a zero-tolerance policy towards cell phones; however, distance learning may require some use of cell phones. Students may need to take a picture of their work to share with me. However, cell phones may NOT be used as calculators, and students should not use their phones to text other students during class. Any student who does not have a cell phone should check out a Chromebook from the school to take pictures and submit work.
Students should focus on the course and not attempt to multi-task by playing games or engaging in other activities during our class time.
Completing a full semester’s work in one quarter will be challenging, so we will need to work efficiently and stay organized. In general, we will complete the following each day:
Students will watch a video for the section before class as homework, completing the Journal problems covered in the video. To ensure everyone is prepared for class, I ask that parents or guardians check the student’s Journal every evening and initial the Journal Sheet to indicate that the listed problems were completed.
To start class, I will answer any questions from the previous evening’s video and present a more challenging problem.
In class, students will break into groups to complete a more thorough Big Ideas assignment. Although they will work together, each student is responsible for completing and turning in his or her own work. I will answer additional questions as they arise during this time.
When we complete a chapter, I will assess each student’s learning with an online quiz. In addition, students may be asked to participate in a one-on-one oral assessment.
No extra credit is available. Grades will be calculated as follows:
Homework, Classwork and Participation = 35%
Chapter Quizzes = 35%
Final exam = 30%
Grading Scale
A computer with internet access is essential in order to participate in daily classes and submit assignments. If your student does not have access to the internet at home or must share a computer, please contact me or Mrs. Johnson (rjohnson@pgusd.org) at the school as soon as possible to check out the required materials.
A basic calculator (NOT a cell phone) is required. A graphing calculator like the TI-84 may be useful, especially for following math courses, but it is not required. We will use on-line tools such as Desmos for graphing.
Students will take notes and complete problems in their Big Ideas Journal.
I suggest students dedicate a single, spiral notebook for all homework assignments.
Daily assignments and videos will be posted to Google Classroom. In addition, students can access the the class website to find the schedule for each chapter and all links to videos. Late work due to an absence will be accepted in accordance with school policy; in general, students are given one additional day to complete the assignment for every day of absence. Unexcused late work will be given partial credit, but it will not be accepted after the class has started a new chapter.
I have office hours after class Tuesday through Friday day each week, or you can email me to schedule an appointment. I highly encourage everyone to take advantage of math tutoring from 1:00 to 2:15 on Mondays and 3:00-4:15 on Thursdays for additional help (Google Classroom code: 2buxkmo). Problems will only grow if you let them fester.
