Integrated Math 1 is the first course in the Integrated Math series, and it covers material from the first half of a traditional Algebra 1 course as well as material from the first half of a high school Geometry course. We will use the Big Ideas textbook and Journal throughout the year. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to enroll in Integrated Math 2; students who excel in the course should consider enrolling in Integrated Math 2 Honors.
Students are expected to log in, with video, daily for our online classes. The chat feature will be enabled, allowing students to ask questions and provide feedback to me during class. Inappropriate comments on this forum will not be tolerated. Students are expected to treat one another with respect and make a consistent, honest effort each day.
In my classroom, there is a zero-tolerance policy towards cell phones; however, distance learning may require some use of cell phones. Students will need to take a picture of their work to earn credit for assignments. Any student who does not have a cell phone should check out a Chromebook from the school to take pictures of assignments. However, cell phones should NOT be used as calculators, and students should not use their phones to text other students during class. Students should focus on the course and not attempt to multi-task by playing games or engaging in other activities during our class time.
Completing a full semester’s work in one quarter will be challenging, so we will need to work efficiently and stay organized. In general, we will complete the following each day:
Students will watch a video for the section before class as homework, completing the Journal problems covered in the video. To ensure everyone is prepared for class, I ask that parents or guardians check the student’s Journal every evening and initial a page to indicate that the listed problems were completed.
To start class, I will answer any questions from the previous evening’s video and present a more challenging problem.
In class, students will break into groups to complete an assignment through the Big Ideas website. Although they will work together, each student is responsible for completing and turning in his or her own work. I will answer additional questions as they arise during this time.
When we complete a chapter, I will assess each student’s learning with an online quiz. In addition, students may be asked to participate in a one-on-one oral assessment.
No extra credit is available. Grades will be calculated as follows.
Homework and Classwork = 35%
End of Chapter Quizzes = 35%
Semester Exam = 30%
Grading Scale
A computer with internet access is essential in order to participate in daily classes and submit assignments. If your student does not have access to the internet at home or must share a computer, please contact me or Mrs. Johnson (rjohnson@pgusd.org) at the school as soon as possible to check out the required materials.
A basic calculator (NOT a cell phone) is required.
Students will take notes and complete problems in their Big Ideas Journal.
I suggest students dedicate a single, spiral notebook or a binder for all homework assignments. Graph paper should be used for graphing problems, and these can be taped into the spiral notebook.
Daily assignments and videos will be posted to Google Classroom. In addition, students can access the our class website to find the schedule for each chapter and all links to videos. Late work due to an absence will be accepted in accordance with school policy; in general, students are given one additional day to complete the assignment for every day of absence. Unexcused late work will be given partial credit, but it will not be accepted after the class has started a new chapter. In the case of an extended absence, we can work together to adjust the schedule.
I have office hours for students after class Tuesday - Friday each week, or you can email me to schedule an appointment. I highly encourage everyone to take advantage of math tutoring from 1:00 to 2:15 on Mondays and 3:00-4:15 on Thursdays for additional help (Google Classroom code: 2buxkmo). Problems will only grow if you let them fester.
