What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader, or AR, is a Reading Renaissance program that Prince George County uses to help promote and encourage reading. AR is no longer a part of the Language Arts grade, however, students will continue to work towards an AR goal.

How does it work?

Students take the STAR assessment throughout the year to determine their reading level range known as the ZPD, or zone of proximal development. These are books that are the "just right" level to help readers grow. After reading an AR book, students earn points by taking an AR test at school on the computer. Each student works toward a goal made just for them. They can earn rewards for their hard work! At South, We want reading to be a positive experience for all students.

How can parents help?

Encourage your child to read everyday! Ask questions about the stories they read and most importantly, keep reading with them! It's important to stay positive! If your child is struggling, let's work together to figure out the why behind the struggle. For ideas on how to help your reader, check out more information, here!

Stay Connected with Renaissance Home Connect

Using your child's AR username and password, you can log on to check in on their progress. Sign up for e-mails to stay up to date on how your star reader is doing. Your child's username and password will be sent home at the start of each school year. Contact us if you need assistance!
