WHAT SHOULD NINTH GRADERS EXPECT IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL
Ninth graders should know that high school is a critical year for both academic and personal growth, requiring strong time management, organizational skills, and the ability to ask for help. They should prepare for more challenging coursework, like Algebra I and biogechemical system, by developing good study habits and getting organized, and get involved in extracurriculars to explore interests and make friends. It's important to stay on track with work, set goals, and understand that making a strong start in ninth grade is crucial for future success.

Academics and Study Skills
Increased Workload: Expect longer reading assignments, more complex projects, and more frequent homework that requires focus and independent study.
Organization is Key: Use a physical or digital planner to track assignments, deadlines, and activities. Keep materials organized to avoid losing track of work.
Develop Strong Study Habits: Avoid cramming; instead, review notes daily in a quiet study spot. Learn how to take effective notes in class.
Advocate for Yourself: Teachers and counselors are resources; don't be afraid to ask for help when struggling with material or choosing classes.
Grades Matter: Freshman year grades establish a foundation for your GPA and future college applications, so take them seriously from the start.
Plan Ahead: Understand your school's graduation requirements and prerequisites for advanced classes you might want to take later.
Social Life and Personal Growth
Friend Groups Shift: Be open to meeting new people and forming friendships with a diverse group of classmates. Don't force yourself to fit into a mold; focus on being yourself.
Get Involved: Join clubs, sports, or other extracurricular activities that genuinely interest you. This is a great way to make friends with shared interests and develop leadership skills.
Prioritize Mental and Physical Health: High school can be stressful. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when needed.
Avoid Drama and Peer Pressure: Stay away from petty fights and negative influences. Be confident in saying "no" to situations that make you uncomfortable and choose friends who respect your boundaries.
Be Respectful: Be kind to everyone, including teachers, staff, and fellow students. A positive reputation and strong relationships with faculty can be beneficial for recommendations later on.
General Navigation
Familiarize Yourself with the Campus: Figure out the locations of your classrooms, locker, and other important areas before the first day to reduce anxiety.
Time Management: Balance schoolwork, activities, and personal time effectively. The ability to manage your own schedule is a crucial life skill.
Mistakes are Okay: You will make mistakes, and that's a normal part of the learning process. The key is to learn from them and keep moving forward.
SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
Do not wear a hat, skull cap, ski mask, or any head covering unless you have a documented religious or medical reason approved by the school.
If wearing a hoodie (hooded sweatshirt), make sure the hood is down and the garment meets the uniform color requirements (if applicable). Better yet, avoid wearing hoodies during class hours unless the school explicitly allows it on a “dress-down” day.
Bring or wear a plain uniform top in the correct grade-level color (for 9th = White; 10th & 11th = Red; 12th = Black) and khaki bottoms, as required by the Suitland High uniform policy. Prince George's County Public Schools+1
Ensure your backpack is clear, as that is another requirement for Suitland High. Prince George's County Public Schools+1
If you need to wear headgear for religious or medical reasons, you should contact the school to have it approved/documented to avoid disciplinary action.
