Plumping and Gasfitters

The Plumbers & Gasfitters U.A. Local 5 Training Facility is a 53,000 square foot facility located in Washington Business Park . Currently there are over 250 Apprentices attending classes that range from Safety and Math to Computer Aided Drafting. These classes are staffed by 27 highly qualified Instructors who ensure that the program delivers the finest level of training. Each year an Apprentice works and attends related training classes increases the value of the apprentice to the employer. The pay structure is based on the Journeypersons hourly wage with increases of 5% every six months completed until year five.

Steamfitters 

A Steamfitter is a person who fabricates, installs and services piping systems. Steamfitters work on different types of piping systems – Residential, Commercial and Industrial. The Apprenticeship program is a five year training program.  Apprentices are assigned to a union contractor and work on assigned work sites, generally forty hours per week, depending on the job conditions and the economy. 

The apprentice is paid for hours worked on the job site but is not paid for attending related training classes.  Accepted applicants will serve a one year probation period.  The probationary apprentice who successfully completes the probationary period by meeting all obligations at assigned employment, in related training class and to the Local Union, will be initiated into the Local Union.

Electrician & Telecommunications

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) is responsible for the training of the electrical and telecommunication workers employed by all signatory contractors of Local Union 26 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) which covers the Washington, DC metropolitan area and Central to Southwestern Virginia. Apprentices will receive pay increases during the course of their apprenticeship based on the amount of work hours they have successfully completed in the program and successful school performance. 

MPD Cadet Corps

The Cadet Corps High School Program is designed to prepare high school seniors for entrance into the full-time Cadet Corps.  This program enables high school seniors to complete their senior year of school while working part-time for the Metropolitan Police Department Cadet Corps.  The MPD Cadet Corps is a specialized program for 17- to 24-year-old Washingtonians to serve as uniformed, civilian employees. As a member of the Cadet Corps, you will earn a salary, while also taking college courses, and will earn up to 60 tuition-free credits toward a degree – putting you on track to enter MPD’s Police Officer Recruit Program. 

To be considered, applicants must complete the following in sequence:

1. Complete an MPD interest card to receive an invitation (within 5-10 days) to an upcoming orientation.

2. Attend the mandatory orientation.

3. Receive permission from parents or guardian, if you are under 18 years old.

4. Undergo a background investigation.

5. Take a Polygraph test (if you are over the age of 18).

6. Submit to a medical evaluation.

7. MPD review and decision.
