DESCRIPTION: This full-year course is designed for students playing a wind or percussion instrument who have not yet developed the skills necessary to be placed in intermediate or advanced band. The emphasis is on the development and remediation of musical skills. Membership in this class is subject to the approval of the instrumental music teacher.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course will enable students to:
1. Gain an appreciation of and a sensitivity to various musical styles representing differing cultures and histories.
2. Develop skills and techniques necessary to become a member of intermediate or advanced band. These skills include:
a. Reading music;
1.) Reading simple and compound meters and rhythmic patterns.
2.) Observing key signatures and performing melodic figures.
b. Holding the instrument correctly;
c. Developing correct embouchure (winds);
d. Developing correct hand position;
e. Playing in tune with a good tone quality;
f. Understanding the musical terminology included in the materials used in class;
g. Tuning the instruments correctly;
h. Sight reading compositions of a basic level; and
i. Listening to selected recordings in order to develop an awareness of the components of various musical periods, styles, and cultures.
DESCRIPTION: This full-year course provides an opportunity for instrumentalists to reinforce and remediate their basic instruction and to gain performing experience on a daily basis. In addition to skill development, emphasis is placed on a high standard of musical excellence in the preparation and performance of band literature. Membership in this class is subject to the approval of the instrumental music teacher. Small group or ensemble instruction should be scheduled.

2. Develop skills and techniques necessary to perform music on an intermediate level. These skills include:
a. Reading Music:
1.) Reading simple and compound meters and rhythmic patterns as found in band methods and literature.
2.) Performing scales and melodic figures in keys as found in the band repertoire.
b. Stressing proper playing habits.
c. Emphasis on good tone quality and intonation.
d. Understanding the musical terminology included in the materials used in class.
e. Independent tuning of instruments.
f. Sight reading compositions of an intermediate level.
g. Listening to selected recordings in order to develop an awareness of the components of various musical periods, styles, and cultures
DESCRIPTION: In this full year course emphasis will be placed on a high standard of musical excellence in the preparation and performance of band literature. The band provides an opportunity for instrumentalists to continue their instruction and to gain performing experience on a daily basis. Membership in this class is subject to the approval of the instrumental music teacher. Small group or ensemble instruction should be scheduled. All members should be alerted to the opportunity of participation in the Prince George's County Youth Orchestra and All-County Honor Band.

2. Develop skills and techniques necessary to perform music on an advanced level. These skills include:
a. Reading Music:
1.) Reading complex meters and rhythmic patterns as found in band methods and literature.
2.) Performing scales and melodic figures in keys as found in band repertoire.
b. Stressing proper playing habits.
c. Continuing emphasis on good tone quality and intonation.
d. Understanding the musical terminology included in the materials used in class.
e. Stressing independent tuning of instruments.
f. Sight reading compositions of a moderately advanced level.
g. Listening to selected recordings in order to develop an awareness of the components of various musical styles, periods and cultures.
