A. General Rules - JLAB Style Event
1. The game format shall consist of four quarters:
● 1st Quarter - 8 tossup questions worth 10 points each
● 2nd Quarter - 4 tossup questions worth 10 points each with 4 sets of bonus questions worth a total of 30 points each
● 3rd Quarter - Three categories consisting of 10 questions worth 10 points each, with each team playing one category (team captain will draw for category)
● 4th Quarter - 8 tossup questions worth 20 points each
2. A team shall consist of a maximum of (6) players who may be in any academic grade. Only in the event of illness, injury or other prior approved exception
may a team compete with fewer than (6) players.
B. Tossup Questions (first, second, and fourth quarters)
1. All tossup questions in the first and second quarters are worth 10 points each. All tossup questions in the fourth quarter are worth 20 points each.
2. A player wishing to answer a tossup question may ring in using the buzzer system at any point after the moderator has begun reading the question. Only
one player per team may ring in to answer any tossup question. Players must ring in to be eligible to answer the question.
3. As soon as a player has rung in, the moderator will stop reading the question and he/she or his/her designee will recognize the team by school name.
While it is encouraged for a team to wait to answer until they have been recognized, there is no penalty for answering before being recognized by a game
official.
4. Once a player has rung in, their team will have 5 seconds to give their answer to the question. Team members are allowed (and encouraged) to discuss
with each other before giving their answer. The answer should come from the player who rang in but there is no penalty if another player on that team gives
the answer. If a team does not begin to give its answer within 5 seconds, they will be deemed non-responsive and their answer will be ruled incorrect; in such
cases, the moderator will give no indication that any answer given was either correct or incorrect.
5. If a team answers a tossup question correctly, they receive the appropriate number of points: 10 points in the first and second quarters, 20 points in the
fourth quarter.
6. If time expires, the moderator will call “time,” give the answer to the question, and proceed to the next question of the match.
C. Bonus Questions (second quarter only)
1. Any time a team answers a tossup question correctly in the second quarter of the match, that team is also entitled to a bonus question consisting of three
parts that are categorically related (e.g., Answer these questions about Presidents of the United States) and worth 10 points each.
2. If the team answers the tossup question correctly, they will get the opportunity to answer on each part of the bonus question, regardless of whether the
team answered correctly on the previous part.
3. After each part of the bonus question is read, team members will have 5 seconds (10 seconds for some math or calculation questions, which will be
specified) to confer with each other before giving their answer. Once that time has expired, the moderator will prompt the team to give an answer (saying
something such as, “Captain, your answer please.”). Once prompted, a team must begin to give their answer within 2 seconds; failure to do so will result in
the team being declared non-responsive and their answer being ruled incorrect for that part of the question. The answer should be given by either the team
captain or his/her designee.
4. If a team answers a part of the bonus question correctly, they receive the appropriate number of points. If they answer incorrectly or do not respond in
time, then we will continue with remainder of that round.
5. In the second quarter, a bonus question is only given if a tossup question is answered correctly. If a tossup question is answered incorrectly by the team, the accompanying bonus question will not be read and the next tossup question will be read instead.
D. The Category Round (third quarter)
1. The third quarter will consist of 10 questions in all: ten questions in each of two categories. Each question will be worth 10 points.
2. At the beginning of the third quarter, the moderator will read the three categories of questions available in the Category Round. The team captain will get to select from the categories.
3. The moderator will then read the questions in the category, one at a time, for the team that selected the category.
4. The rules for the questions are the same as bonus questions. If a team answers incorrectly, the correct answer will be given and the next question in the
category will be read (if applicable).
- Only difference is that there will only be one team in a room at a time with opportunity to answer all the same questions. Only the third quarter (category round) will be different for most, based on whatever team captain selects.
