Body Temperature
1. Watch the following 2 videos dealing with what a person's body temperature should be and how to use a temporal scanner to take your temperature.
2. Remove the cover from the temporal scanner.
3. Hold the button in and place the scanner flat against the forehead of your partner. Move the scanner across the forehead and toward the ear as shown in the video. Be sure to keep the scanner in contact with the skin at all times.
4. Complete this task twice to see if the readings are the same or at least close.
5. Switch and have the other partner use the scanner.
6. Are your temperatures the normal 98.6 degrees? Do you have a fever?
Pulse & Pulse Ox
Next you will be checking your pulse and pulse oxygen levels.
Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is an easy, painless measure of how well oxygen is being sent to parts of your body furthest from your heart, such as the arms and legs.
1. Take the pulse oximeter out of the protective case.
2. Push the ends to open the "clip," and carefully insert your index finger.
3. Press the button to turn on the meter.
4. Your pulse will be displayed in the top right corner of the meter
5. Your pulse oxygen level will be shown at the bottom left corner of the meter.
In a healthy person, oxygen saturation levels in arterial blood fall between 95 and 100 percent, according to the World Health Organization. A reading below 95 percent in a healthy person with normal lung function indicates low oxygen levels in the blood, a condition medically termed hypoxemia and requires medical investigation.
Oxygen saturation levels less than 90 percent should be considered a medical emergency, WHO advises. Symptoms of hypoxemia, including cyanosis, or a bluish coloring to the skin and mucus membranes, aren't evident until oxygen saturation falls below 90 percent. Early signs of poor oxygenation include rapid or difficult breathing, unexplained restlessness or apprehension or confusion.
6. Is your pulse and pulse ox in the normal range?
7. Switch and let your partner try it.
Blood Pressure
Follow the instructions on the cuff of the blood pressure meter to take your blood pressure.
Is your blood pressure normal, high, or low?
Watch the video below and follow along using the stethoscopes.
Height and Weight
1. Take turns using the scale near the SMARTBoard to check your weight. Just step on to the scale. Partners should stay back from each other so the weight is not visible to the other person.
2. Measure your height. One partner should stand with his/her back against the wall (near the poster that says "Cooperation" to the left of the SMARTBoard). The other partner will place a hand on top of that person's head. Step away from the wall and use the measuring tape to determine your height.
When finished, you can play the webgames section of this site. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR STATION!
