English Language Supports at School- Ohio Department of Education and Workforce
All students enrolling in Perry complete a Language Usage Survey (LUS). Students who indicate a language other than English on the LUS will be screened with the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) to determine eligibility for English language services. Parents will be informed if students qualify for English language services with an explanation of the services. Students will be placed in age-appropriate grade-level content classrooms and receive additional language support as needed based on language and academic needs. Students may receive allowable instruction and assessment modifications and/or accommodations to ensure access to content learning.
At Perry, we celebrate the diverse cultures and languages that make our schools vibrant. We are committed to a community where every family belongs, and every student’s heritage is valued. For our students developing English skills, our highly qualified educators provide the linguistic and academic support necessary to accelerate learning in our classrooms and beyond.

The amount of time a student receives English language services will vary for each individual student. Research shows it may take 5-7 years to acquire academic language proficiency, but the amount of time will vary based on a student’s experiences. Perry will monitor the progress of students’ language using classroom tools and the annual Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA). Students exit from the services when they reach proficiency on the OELPA.
