Summer brings an opportunity to explore your passions and try new things. Summer brings the opportunities to learn, reflect and grow. Summer brings the freedom to establish new habits and take on new attitudes. Summer brings ample time to read, read, read. This summer we want to encourage all of our students to remember they are life-long learners. This summer we hope you, our students, will keep your brains engaged through summer reading. Developing a "reading habit" is a critical component of becoming a successful citizen in the world. It is a way to laugh, cry, and make sense of the world. It offers us mirrors to reflect upon our lives and experiences, and doors to peer into worlds that our unfamiliar to us. Summer offers us endless hours to read on our own terms about our passions, one great book after another. Summer reading is an investment in YOU.
PRInTS is a district-wide initiative to encourage students to read and invest in themselves throughout the summer. This year from K-12 we are encouraging all students to select their own books for summer reading. To that end we have compiled some great titles and places to get free electronic books that we have organized by grade bands. This will offer students an opportunity to enrich their reading lives and writing skills. The expectation is that students will choose a book at their reading level or grade-level and read. We encourage students to select a text that will be of high interest. On our pages there are also documents to track the titles that students read as well as documents for older students that may be used to gather notes on the book(s). Click to the appropriate pages by grade band (Elementary ELA, Middle School ELA and High School ELA ) for details.

Even though the requirement is one book, we are encouraging the continuation of reading multiple texts throughout the summer and into the upcoming school year.
In his book "On Writing" Stephen King proclaims that "Books are uniquely portable magic." Never has there been a better summer for portable magic.
Enjoy your summer and Happy Reading!
Best,

We have crafted our summer reading to reflect our beliefs that….
Student choice gives students a voice in their learning.
Student choice leads to authentic engagement with the text as well as the community of readers.
Student choice empowers readers to seek out and foster their interests.
Student choice encourages more stamina and volume of reading overall.
This site has been created to provided reading suggestions and resources for students and families as they seek out summer reading that speaks to them. We have created separate pages for high school, middle school and elementary students in order to provide appropriate suggestions for these separate grade bands based on content, interest and reading levels. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their students to understand their students' reading selections. We have also provided many ideas to foster critical thinking and literacy skills. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our ELA Department using this email address: carrie.thomas@pequannock.org
