The framework is comprised of four components, all of which are integrated and enhance each other. The first domain addresses planning and preparation, which is essential for effective teaching. Evaluators will be looking for thoughtful and thorough lesson planning that demonstrates an articulated progression of learning objectives, engaging activities, and assessments for learning and assessments of learning aligned to the NJSLS and the core practices within that content area.
The second domain addresses the overall classroom environment. Evaluators will look to see how students interact with you and each other; that the classroom culture conveys excitement and an enthusiasm for learning; that the room and the procedures are well structured and organized to maximize the time for learning; and finally how the students manage their behavior.
The third domain addresses the teaching and learning that was planned in domain 1. Evaluators will look for the effectiveness and clarity of providing instruction and instructions; the quality of discussions and questions by the students and the teacher; the engagement of students in activities, which differ from compliance or being busy; finally, assessment for learning and assessments of learning that are designed to provide the teacher with information to determine student growth.
The last area, domain 4 addresses the overall professionalism of the teacher. Evaluators will look for evidence in areas including but not limited to that of professional growth and development; attention to and completion of required tasks and responsibilities; communication with families and students; and reflection on their teaching.
Domain 1 measures your professional planning and preparation for your teaching. As evaluators, we are looking for the depth and level of your preparation for your lessons.
Domain 2 examines the classroom environment. This is the tone, rapport, feeling, look, how students respond in the environment that's been created by you. Some of the things evaluators look for - are the students willing to take risks, do they feel safe in doing so, and do they respect the teacher and their peers.
Domain 3 examines the instruction within the room. This does not need to be just led by the teacher, but that the students are engaged in the learning that is occurring.
Examines your professional responsibilities.
