Intent:
At Peninsula East primary Academy, we want all of our children to become competent readers, writers, speakers and listeners. Our school views the acquisition of English skills to be a vital, fundamental tool, which will support life skills necessary for next steps in education. Consequently, the teaching of all the aspects of English are given a high priority. It is our intention to immerse our children in the wonders of quality texts, immersive inquiries and authentic writing opportunities to instil a love for reading, a passion for writing and a confidence to explore their imagination.
Implementation:
At Peninsula East Primary Academy, we approach much of our reading and writing through engaging inquiries based on the six central ideas that make up the PYP. This allows us to link writing skills with authentic pieces of writing that link with children's current learning. Alongside these opportunities, grammar and punctuation is embedded using workshop style teaching to give children the relevant understanding to be able to apply skills in the moment. We use Jane Considine's 'Writing Rainbow' to make writing skills explicit and use the symbols that come with this to help children understand a writer's techniques. Across the school, links are made between our inquiries and key texts to allow for enriching reading opportunities that develop comprehension skills as well as further understanding of our inquiries. We use VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval, Summarise) style questioning to develop our comprehension skills and link this with phonics teaching in KS1. We embed opportunities for speaking and listening within all aspects of our learning and, again, link this to our inquiries using tools such as debates and presentations.
Impact:
We strive to ensure that our children’s attainment in both Reading and Writing is in line with or exceeds their potential. All children are assessed against the National Curriculum for Reading and Writing. Children are given clear next steps to enable them to make progress and ultimately, become more confident readers and writers as they make their journey through the school, mastering comprehension skills, writing at length and manipulating grammar and punctuation.
Using the writing rainbow, we are able to focus in on different writing skills within our lessons. When writing, we will choose symbols from the rainbow to help teach skills for writing that the children will then use within their writing. This approach helps us to scaffold and model a range of skills, helping children to feel confident when writing independently.
We use the VIPERS approach to reading. Here you will see some examples of questions for the different elements of VIPERS. Please feel free to use these questions with your children when they are reading with you.
In class, we look at a variety of books and extracts including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We practise fluency skills with the children before focussing in on the text using VIPERS questioning. This helps children to link the types of questions with different reading domains and skills.
Here are some posters that show recommended reads for each year group. These are from the fantastic Reader Teacher website.
Please find here the skills for writing from the national curriculum organised by year group. We use these to help children to have age appropriate understanding of writing across the curriculum.
Here you can see the skills for reading that we teach across the school. These link with the national curriculum and many are covered using our VIPERS approach to reading.
