Weekly Fluency Lists are located in your child's daily take home folder. One list will be assigned each week. The first weekly quiz will take place the 5th week of school. The Weekly Fluency List should be practiced every day at home at least 5-7 minutes. Some children may need to spend more time studying. The Fluency Lists cover page will note the day your child will take their weekly quiz. If your child is absent on their quiz date they will be quizzed upon their return. Fluency List quizzing will continue each week on your child's assigned day. I will notify you if we postpone a week of quizzing, usually around holidays. The weekly scores are recorded as a grade and to track progress and growth: High-Frequency Words (HFW), Decodable Words, and Sentence Fluency are graded categories on the report cards.
High-Frequency Words (HFWs) or "Sight Words" are ones that occur most frequently in our language. Many don't necessarily follow common sound patterns, so they must be memorized since they have not necessarily learned the phonics for those words. The expectation for the student is to recite HFW without hesitation or within 5 seconds.
Decodable Words are the words that can be sounded out. Decodables need to be recited without hesitation or within 5 seconds. For example: The words Pam and Sam are samples of Decodable Words. These words are words that your child can sound out and blend as needed. I have posted a short video below for how we learn and practice decodable words in class.
Sentence Fluency is demonstrated when a sentence is read fluently, sounding natural and using expression/inflection (when applicable).
