Childrens Internet Protection Act
The Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act
In October, 2008 Congress passed the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act. It includes a provision that requires schools to educate students about Internet safety. That education should include instruction on appropriate online-behavior with respect to:
a) interacting with others on social networking sites and in chat rooms
b) cyberbullying awareness and response
Compliance is required beginning July 1, 2011.
As part of the new law, schools will be able to create their own Internet Safety curriculum, but it will need to cover all ages of students and grade levels.
