Quick fixes
Most issues can be resolved by rejoining the meeting, or restarting the chromebook.
A known issue has appeared where Google Meet on some chromebooks will freeze the entire chromebook with a black screen. To resolve this immediately follow these steps!
1. Open Chrome OS web browser and type in “chrome://flags/#disable-webrtc-hw-encoding”
2. On the WebRTC option please make sure you choose “disabled”
3. Press “restart” on bottom right.
Chromebook slow when in a meet and using other tabs? Try this fix for recent versions of ChromeOS, which seems to help
Open Chrome OS web browser and type in “chrome://flags/#chromeos-video-decoder”
Set this to "disabled"
Restart your chromebook
Google meet not active? Make sure your teacher has started the meeting!
Google meet nickname not working? Ask your teacher for the meeting link!
"Unable to join" a meet? The organizer of the Google Meet can directly invite you in a pinch.
Google Meet is resource intensive and we recommend these tips to avoid issues. (in order of most impactful)
Use Spotlight View or turn camera off
Close all tabs other than Meet
Restart the computer, and/or WiFi router if applicable
Clear browsing data (cookies, cache, browsing history, etc.
Check WiFi network to ensure you are using your best home network
Remove Meet extensions
Remove other extensions
Reboot Chromebook Often
Turn off bluetooth
Use built in microphone
Close non-essential tabs
Check WiFi network
Reboot router and move device close to router
Contact cable provider for support
Ensure 25 Mbps bandwidth and upgrade router
If audio or video is poor, try the following:
Use a headset with a microphone.
Make sure Meet is set to the correct camera, microphone and speakers. Headsets may use the built-in microphone.
Disconnect external monitors.
Make sure your bluetooth headset works with Meet. Some bluetooth headsets work well for normal audio calls but poorly with Meet.
Update your headset or camera to the latest firmware.
