Female Athlete of the Month:
Shelby Houghton
Shelby Houghton
by Mackenzie Armstrong
Shelby Houghton is a senior here at PHS. She has been doing track since her junior year, and participates in both the javelin and shot put events. Her shot put PR (personal record) is 30 feet 7 ½ inches, which she just achieved this spring season.
Q: How are you feeling about your season so far?
A: “Pretty good. I started off my first meet with a big PR. My whole winter season I was trying to work to hit 30 ft and that's like the big goal. First thing this season I got my PR by almost a foot, so it’s nice to see my work paying off. I’m feeling good.”
Q: What made you decide to play this sport, and how long have you been playing for?
A: “I started track my junior year spring season. I've always wanted to do track but I put most of my time into basketball because that was what I really loved, but with my coaches in the past it was just a really toxic environment. I thought my time would be better spent doing track where I feel valued. I just love lifting and it’s perfect, so throwing is a good combination where I get to do strength and conditioning but also technique. It’s just a great environment with coaches that want to help you thrive.”
Q: Are you going to continue this sport in college?
A: “I thought about it but probably not because I started so late, I wish I started track sooner. I was talking to this one college in Pennsylvania because they have the specific academic program I was looking at. I think with my studies it would be too difficult to balance both college athletics and school.”
Q: What is your favorite part about track?
A: “My favorite part is probably just the setup of the practices. I feel like it’s a great balance. I feel myself getting better everyday when I see my weights go up in the weight room. When we practice free throws it feels very effective and it’s nice when you have personal feedback from the coaches.”

Luke Lamar, Senior Captain on the Pembroke Track and Field team made May Athlete of the month. The Titan Times asked him questions about his athleticism. He has broken many school records on the track over his four years of highschool and has received multiple awards.
Q: What's your favorite moment on the track that you will remember forever?
A: "Winning an All state championship in the 4x100m relay last year and setting the Massachusetts state record. It was an amazing experience that always reminds me to keep working hard."
Q: What does your morning routine look like on meet days?
A: "I wake up at 6:30 after 8 hours of sleep minimum, change, and eat a small breakfast with protein, like eggs with toast or yogurt, an apple and peanut butter."
Q: What motivates you to keep pushing your limits?
A: "Representing my school, family, and coaches is a big motivator for me, competing at the collegiate level also drives me to push past my limits."
Q: What challenges have you overcome to be at where you are right now?
A: "I've faced many ups and downs in my performance over the years, even going entire seasons without setting new PRs in certain events which was hard to overcome mentally, but trusting my coaches and the training helped me get over these obstacles."
Q: What advice do you have for upcoming athletes?
A: "Track is a difficult sport. You may not see progress for weeks, months, and sometimes even years, but if you continue to stay consistent, take care of your body, and trust your coaching, you are sure to have a huge breakthrough."
Q: What mark are you hoping to leave as a senior?
A: "I hope to leave a lasting impression on all of the underclassmen and incoming seniors. We lost a couple heavy point scorers after this year so the team will definitely face some adverse moments. I want to remind everyone to keep working hard and pushing each other to be better."

The baseball season is underway and the team is ready to build off of last season and make a case for the Division 3 Tournament. The team is off to a 4-7 start, which is not nearly as good as the team would've wished to start the season, but there are still many games left. Pembroke baseball is coming off of a strong win against Quincy, where the Titans outscored the Presidents 12 runs to 3. Asked about keys to success for the rest of the season, Senior Captain Brandon Bedrosian responded, "We need to limit the amount of walks we are giving up as pitchers, and we need to have better situational hitting." Bedrosian just recently made his return from a shoulder injury. He was 1/3 with 2 RBIs in the win vs. Quincy. Senior Cam Fryar and Sophomore Anthony Pento were among some of the stars of the Quincy game. Fryar recorded a 3/3 game and Pento pitched a solid 5 innings.

The Boys tennis team started off the season with a very close loss to Rockland 2-3 before falling short against Duxbury, Hanover, and North Quincy. Although they started the season 0-4, the Titans avenged their first loss of the season with a strong 4-1 victory over Rockland. Following that, the Pembroke Boys Tennis team would go on another 3 loss stretch against Scituate, Plymouth North, and Quincy. Although the Titans have begun the season 1-7, their competition level has been high enough to place them at the #18 rank in Division 3, where the top 32 teams make the tournament. The season is still far from over.
