Minecraft Movie:
Is it Worth the Hype?
by Jake Sheehan
After years of rumors and delays, the Minecraft movie is finally here. As a longtime fan of the game, I went into the theater with curiosity and a bit of skepticism. How do you make a movie out of a game with no real plot? Surprisingly, they managed to pull it off for the most part.
The film follows Henry, a young builder who has to unite the villagers and defeat a mysterious force threatening the Overworld. It's a classic hero’s journey with plenty of action, humor, and references to the game. While the story isn’t groundbreaking, it’s enjoyable and easy to follow.
Visually, the movie strikes a nice balance. It keeps the blocky style of the game but adds just enough extra detail to make it work on the big movie screen. From creepers to the Ender Dragon, everything looks familiar yet fresh. There are even a few sequences that feel straight out of a player’s wildest dream.
The voice cast includes a few big names such as Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and for the most part, they do a solid job. The main character is likable, though not super memorable. Still, the dialogue is funny, and younger viewers will definitely be entertained.
If there’s one flaw, it’s that the movie sometimes tries too hard to please both hardcore fans and newcomers. That means a few slow scenes and over-explained moments that could’ve been handled better.
That said, this movie clearly comes from a place of love for the game. It celebrates the creativity and adventure that make Minecraft so popular, and it’s a fun watch for fans of all ages.
The NFL Draft:
In Review
by Jared Fitzpatrick
From April 24th-26th, the NFL held the 90th annual draft to select newly eligible college players from the Colleges and Universities of the country.
The draft began with the Tennessee Titans selecting standout University of Miami Quarterback Cam Ward. Ward was considered by most to be the best available QB in this draft but many believed he would have not been amongst the best in the year prior's draft, implying that the 2025 draft was weaker than most.
Following Cam Ward, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up 3 selections with the Cleveland Browns to select the University of Colorado's Travis Hunter. Hunter, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, is touted by many as a "generational" prospect. Hunter brings the enticing ability to play both sides of the ball, which is something that has never been seen before at a high level.
Some other first round selections included Abdul Carter and Will Campbell. Carter, selected by the New York Giants with the 3rd pick, will look to bring some heavy defensive pressure to a lacking Giants defense. On the other hand, Will Campbell, the 4th selection to the New England Patriots, will look to help protect 2nd year Quarterback Drake Maye in the Patriots' quest back to Super Bowl glory.
Apart from the first round, there were some other important stories to note from this draft. Going into the draft, many people believed that University of Colorado Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was a guaranteed top-10 pick and was surely the 2nd best quarterback in the draft. As the picks passed by, Sanders found himself waiting to get his name called until the 5th round, where the Cleveland Browns selected him at pick 144. Many notable reporters believed this draft slip to be completely unprecedented, as Sanders was seen as a very good player.
Overall, the draft was one of many highs and many lows for different players, but nonetheless, all 257 selected players fulfilled their dreams of being in the NFL.
