Want to practice Word Work at home? Please check your child's Take Home Folder weekly for option practice pages.
Practice dictating red words and concept words to your child, and have them write the word or build it with letter tiles. For a multi-sensory approach, students can write the words in a plate of sand or sugar! You may also dictate a sentence and encourage your child to write it, using correct capitalization and punctuation.
Write the focus words on flash cards and have your child practice reading the focus words to increase automaticity.
Read a book at home and have students "listen out" for the focus concept, and red words. Ask you child to give a thumbs up or point to the letter-sound when you read it aloud. Allow students to help you read the red words in the book! For literature that encourages the focus concept of the week, view the lists below.
Decodable Text: These books have words that focus on the phonics or spelling pattern. These words are decodable, meaning that students can use the phonics pattern to "sound out" the word. By practicing decoding, students build automaticity. Practice reading and rereading these controlled texts to build fluency. Students will bring home a decodable text for each phonics concept.
