“You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald
Writing is a process. As we delve into creating our own writing pieces in first grade, we continue to build our skills through this writing process. From handwriting to writing stories, we want to encourage students that they are writers.
Explore this page for student and parent writing resources. This page will continue to be updated regularly.
To launch our writer's workshop, we are warming up and showing students that they are writers! We begin our year writing list books and pattern books.
When writing list books at home, encourage your child to brainstorm lists. These lists can vary from foods, to movies, or even favorite sports teams!
Planning Writing
We are working on the planning process by listing things we would include in our books on our finger tips before writing. Students may also use a sheet of paper to plan their ideas but jotting down words (not sentences) of things they want to include in their book.
Ready to Write?
As students begin to write encourage them to stretch out the sounds they hear in a word, and write the sounds they hear. If students have difficulty spelling a word, you might encourage them to write the word by stretching out the sounds, then circle the word and move on. You may refer to an alphabet chart to remind students of their letter-sounds, and letter formation. We also are working on using spacing between our words. You may encourage your child to use "finger spaces" between each word.
Finished Writing?
Writing is a process. We are encourage students that when we finish a piece of writing, there is always things we can do before publishing! As writers, we are learning that good writers reread their writing, and find ways they can make it stronger. This a great opportunity to work on capitalization, and punctuation, as well as adding more details.
Our small moments writing unit gives students the opportunity to share their stories as writers. We will continue to learn strategies for planning writing, adding details, and more as we write our own narratives.
