Effective September 1, Campus Public Safety Officers will begin unarmed patrols of campus as President Percy announced in June.
The CPSO website has been updated to reflect this change: https://www.pdx.edu/campus-safety/

As of Sept. 1, 2021, routine campus patrols at Portland State University are being conducted without firearms.
This is a groundbreaking transition. This shift in policy supports PSU’s values of racial equity and justice.
We are grateful for the leadership of Chief Willie Halliburton in overseeing this transition which required months of stewardship in revising and reviewing detailed policies and procedures and recruiting and training committed police officers.
PSU employs six sworn officers who are committed to this new way of keeping the campus safe, with a seventh officer finishing training in the police academy. In addition, CPSO is hiring additional non-sworn Public Safety officers and Student Safety Ambassadors who will round out the patrol team.
In addition to ongoing partnership with Portland Police, sworn CPSO officers are committed to community safety and will have access to firearms on campus should an incident require an armed response.
