Tessa McCarthy, PhD, TVI, COMS: She is an Assistant Professor of Special Education at University of Pittsburgh, a teacher of students with visual impairments, and a certified orientation and mobility specialist. Her research interests focus on the fluency of braille readers as well as the mechanical differences in hand movements of highly efficient braille readers verses those who read slowly. McCarthy served as the lead methodologist and researcher for the Braille Challenge Mobile Application (BCMA) a Stepping-Up Technology Implementation grant funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). McCarthy was a longstanding member of the Research Committee of the Braille Authority of North America.
