Nuts and Bolts of Distance Consultation Strategies: Takeaways from Current Research
Summary
Purpose: This topic summarizes a literature review into the use of distance consultation/telepractice strategies to deliver O&M services, and then due to the limited results, uses principles of distance consultation from fields such as rehabilitation, occupational therapy and speech/language services to suggest to augment services to students’ clients who live in rural and remote areas.
Important: The module authors do not support distance consultation strategies as a way to take the place of, or make up for a lack of face-to-face instruction, but to provide a continuity between onsite visits.
There are many considerations when using technology and glitches can occur. There needs to be a match between student/client, family, school personnel and support assistants; technology applications/accessibility and scope of service in order for the use of distance consultation strategies to increase equity of services to students and clients in rural and remote communities.
