Program Benefits

FORWARD PSU offers students an immersive, 12-month clinical placement where they will actively contribute to clinical research and healthcare teams at local organizations. 

This hands-on experience provides an invaluable opportunity to engage with clinical environments, develop practical skills, and build meaningful connections within the healthcare field.

Clinical placements could be at OHSU, PSU, or other local organizations. 

Students will participate in empowering, professional development workshops designed to support their success in healthcare pathways. 

These workshops celebrate Native excellence while providing tools for navigating higher education, understanding the hidden curriculum, and preparing for graduate school applications. 

Highlights include career panels, personalized application support, an inspiring speaker series, and practical sessions on building and leveraging mentoring relationships. 

Every aspect of the programming is tailored to uplift students’ unique strengths and foster their growth as future leaders in healthcare.

FORWARD PSU connects students with three types of mentors to provide comprehensive and tailored support throughout the program:

• Clinical Mentor: Students will work closely with clinical mentors from their placements. These mentors are carefully selected to align with students’ interests, focus areas, and academic needs, ensuring a meaningful and impactful mentorship experience.

• Career Mentor: Faculty mentors and program staff will guide students in developing a sense of belonging within critical health fields. Career mentors will foster supportive professional networks, teach essential self-advocacy skills, and help students create individualized development plans (IDPs) that align with their goals and aspirations.

• Peer Mentor:  Each student will be matched with a near-peer mentor—an advanced student at PSU who is also pursuing a healthcare pathway. Peer mentors provide relatable guidance, program-specific insights, and encouragement to help students navigate challenges and succeed in the program.

FORWARD PSU provides a holistic support system to address students’ individual needs and challenges, creating an environment where they can thrive academically and personally. Students in the program can apply for support in regards to:

• Summer Housing 

• Food security

• Mental health services

• Additional needs as they arise

By addressing these critical areas, FORWARD PSU ensures students are supported both inside and outside the classroom, allowing them to focus on their academic and professional growth.
