Liu-Qin tends to view mentoring as a dynamic and personal process. In other words, she believes her style (or strategy) in mentoring works best when adapted to the background of different graduate students.
"For students who come in to our lab without any prior graduate-level training, I tend to offer more 1-on-1 meetings with them so that they can get more guidance from me during the earlier part of their graduate career. These students are encouraged to gain experiences and skills through participation in existing lab projects before they take a lead on certain project(s)."
"In contrast, for students who come in with some graduate level training, I tend to encourage them to make more independent contributions to lab projects (e.g., as project lead or co-lead) as soon as they feel fully adjusted to the lab and graduate program, as a way to challenge them and support their needs for competence and autonomy."
"Besides working with graduate students on various research and applied projects, I also make diligent effort to know each graduate student personally and encourage a collegial and vibrant lab culture that supports the needs of different students throughout their graduate career and cultivates diverse interests and development trajectories."
"She challenges me a lot...and I love it!"

"She puts the tea in transformational leadership"
"She grounds us in theory, figuratively and literally"
"She supports our expressions of the self, including our affinity for water fountains and fake plants"
