This is a space before our event to join in some fun conversation, polls, get questions answered, and meet new folks!
This is also an optional Elevator Pitch help/practice time, but we strongly encourage Scholars to attend. These sessions are for Scholars who have questions, concerns, or need help with their pitch.
Optional help sessions are offered before and after the required SRA times on Days 2 and 3. Check out the agenda on Days 2 & Day 3 for optional session times. Scholars may attend as many optional sessions as they wish. They may also attend part of a session if they only need a little help.
In these sessions, Scholars will be placed in a small practice group with approximately 4-5 Scholars and an EXITO Staff/Faculty member.

A welcome from Staff and Faculty who created Summer Research Academy and run the BUILD EXITO program!
This session will feature a talk from Dr. Shandee Dixon who will focus on how research can address health disparities and inequities in our communities.
Dr. Shandee Dixon is working on developing Camelid-derived single-domain antibodies (Nanobodies) for early cancer biomarker detection and tumor imaging strategies and is also working on developing both Organoid and mouse models to study tumor development and progression. Dr. Dixon received her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
This panel discussion will give incoming Scholars a chance to hear from current 1st year EXITO Scholars and ask questions! EXITO's Academic Advisor, Carlos Quatela, will moderate. EXITO is a Research Project! The National Institutes of Health (the funder of EXITO) wants to learn what helps students succeed as future researchers. During your time as an EXITO student, we will be asking you to complete surveys and participate in interviews.
This session will cover details regarding informed consent as a participant in the EXITO study.
