Station Rotation model

The station rotation model enables teachers to design in-class blended learning experiences for their learners. The teacher organises learners into groups within the classroom, where at least one station is a technology-based learning experience. This model allows teachers to create smaller learning groups within the larger class and to design more personalised and differentiated learning experiences. It is particularly useful for schools with limited access to technology.

Learners are exposed to dynamic approaches of blended learning in which learners rotate between learning stations such as:

Small group teacher led instruction

Digital Learning Station

Collaborative offline activities and stations

Each learner can rotate between online learning and other stations on a custom or fixed schedule. Teachers may decide that learners are not always required to rotate to each station - and so learners may be free to select what method works best for them. This variation of the model is referred to as the ‘individual rotation model’ (Christensen, Horn, and Staker 2013)

Pupils could:

watch an instructional video to reinforce learning
listen to a podcast or audiobook followed by a discussion or problem solving activity
read a digital book or article sourced on websites such as Get Epic!, Oxford Owl, World Book Online, DK Find Out, CLiC News, BBC Newsround etc.
contribute to a whole-class discussion on online platforms such as Mentimeter or Padlet and reflect on the real-time responses of their peers (anonymously if preferred).
create digital content using a range of content creation tools
complete differentiated learning activities
watch a video on Edpuzzle and answer the formative assessment questions and prompts embedded throughout the video.
add evidence of their learning to their digital portfolio
