Term One Big Idea - Identity and Inclusion
With the overarching idea being Identity and Inclusion, our language program will focus on investigating culturally diverse texts, allowing students the autonomy to choose how they will produce their understanding of information, small group sessions focused on direct instruction, writer's workshops exploring a variety of writing styles and strategies.
Term Two Big Idea - Activism
With the overarching idea being Activism, students will explore Social Justice based topics and analyse how activism and advocacy helps support the inclusion and equity of others. Term two will focus on non fiction writing styles such as essays, reports and persuasive paragraphs. Students will have the opportunity of practicing their essay writing skills, through direct writers workshop instruction.

Creative writing and Evidence-based writing
The focus will be on descriptive writing, dialogue, character traits, rhythm and beat (Creative Writing)
The focus will be on proper essay format, persuasive writing, embedded citations (Evidence Writing)
Writing for a variety of different audiences
Reading
Read a variety of texts (novels, graphic novels, poems, online text, etc.)
Analyze author's purpose and message
