There are no board or government approved programs that allow for the use of flexible seating strategies in the regular, elementary or secondary school classrooms. Currently, if interested in the concept teachers must educate themselves about the concept and use their own funds, or funds provided from like-minded administrators to provide alternatives for seating arrangements in their regular classroom design. Although research* supports the positive effects of flexible seating and classroom design, many teachers still face an uphill battle convincing others that it is a viable and appropriate learning strategy to support the academic achievement and mental health and wellness of 21st Century learners. What follows is my personal journey of implementing a flexible seating format in my classroom.
