Flexible seating is dismantling the traditional, Eurocentric physical set up of classrooms. Flexible seating replaces single person desks and chairs with multiple seating options (standing desks, floor pillows, stationary bikes, yoga balls, benches, stools ect). The goal of flexible seating is to allow for student autonomy in where to sit and how they work best, as well as to increase opportunities for student collaboration and student to student mentoring. Based on current research, flexible seating has the ability to benefit a students mental health, self-efficacy, level of engagement and physical health by limiting sedentary behaviours. Images to the right are examples of classrooms with flexible seating.
