Talking to Your Student about School
Talking about Hybrid or Online Learning is not as simple as opening up a backpack and going through your student's binder, but the right questions will help you understand what your student is learning and how they might need help.
The best way for you to find out about how school is going is for your student to show you. Sit down beside them at their computer or device and get them to explain it to you. While some of our platforms allow for parents to be part of online classrooms as “guests,” engaging with your students directly is the best way to learn about their day. If you have any questions, reach out to your student’s teachers or guidance counsellors. Here are some questions to ask your student to get you started.
"Can you show me what you are working on?" Go ahead! Sit beside them on their device and actually look at the files!
"When I was in school I learned like ________________. Can you show me how you're learning it? I am curious." Show them that you understand that learning looks different today, but you are interested.
"Where do you go on this website to see what assignments you still have to complete? Where can you go to see what you have finished?" Have them open up their Google Classroom or Brightspace account and show you. We have video for that!
"Can you show me where to find your most recent lesson?" Ask them to summarize what the lesson is all about! If they can't find the lesson, use our videos.
"How much of today's learning was synchronous? Can you show me what you learned during your independent work time?" The schedule can be challenging. Here are some resources to help you know what class to attend each day.
