This class is designed to be interactive and will have many opportunities for student participation.
This type of class atmosphere requires that students be very mindful of the need to communicate in a way that creates an inclusive safe space for all of our community and throughout the college campus. It is important that you follow your instructor’s prompts regarding when to start and stop conversations/interactions so everyone can be heard.
The classroom is to be used to focus on skill acquisition and not for a forum to identify, articulate and try to process through emerging feeling states. And If you need to meet with your instructor to discuss feeling related matters, please schedule time to do so.
In this virtual classroom please do your best to maintain your composure and professional persona always. It is perfectly acceptable to step away for brief periods if you need to center yourself and regroup.
Self-management is an essential skill in the addiction-counseling world and is an expectation for this course. It is the instructor’s responsibility to facilitate student’s interactions and to govern the length and appropriateness of any given interaction. To create and maintain a positive learning environment for all students the following guidelines are to be followed:
1. Arrive on time, return from break on time, stay in the classroom until class is over.
3. Keep conversations between students to designated times/activities determined by the instructor. If you believe a conversation with your classmates would contribute to your learning, please request this during the class.
4. Please turn off all electronic devices except for recording devices or laptops used for note taking (not for checking e-mail). Music, headphones, phones, texts, etc. are not contributory to a positive and focused classroom experience. Not abiding by this guideline impacts the learning experience for all and will be addressed as such. Students will receive a warning regarding this policy. The second warning will involve a 5-point deduction from their total score.
If a student has an emergency that requires that they monitor their cell phone, they are still asked to leave all their devices off while in the classroom and to step away from the classroom to monitor their cell phones. Students can self-govern their own needs to take breaks to monitor emergency situations.
Class will begin promptly at 2:00 pm and end at 4:30 pm.
Food and beverages are allowed in class if they are of the quiet variety since we are aware you may have another class and or work schedules right after. When meeting in person please clean up after yourselves and clean up any spills if they occur.
Most important is creating a safe space to have an exceptional learning experience by all!
The Portland Community College Code of Student Conduct is available online at Code of Student Conduct- examples of not following the code of condct or policy with regard to this course include copying and/or using another students homework materials (from this or previous semesters), plagiarizing (including unaltered cut-and-paste from websites) and/or failing to cite reference (including websites) for projects, and copying or using unauthorized materials during exams. To not follow the code of conduct or policy will result in zero points earned on the assignment and/or final presentation and may be referred for disciplinary action in accordance PCC protocols. Not understanding the academic integrity policy is not an acceptable reason for not following the protocol or you protect you from experiencing the natural consequences. This is why it is so important to check in with your instructor. Ask questions then ask again!
Your instructor will be available after class and by appointment only. Pls text your First Name plus “BPLs” (Baby Pink Lungs) to 360.334.2626 to schedule an appointment. We will do our best to respond within 24 hours Monday through Friday. Texts and or emails sent outside of the work week or holidays will be responded the following weekday. You are a valued member of this class - we are here to support you!
Worth repeating! Please turn off all electronic devices except for recording devices or laptops used for note taking (not for checking e-mail, surfing the web, checking social media, etc.). Music, headphones, phones, texts, etc. are not allowed. In the event the student insists on not adhearing to this policy the instructor may elect to reduce their point total by the equivalent of one half of a letter grade. Using unacceptable electronic devices make it so hard on your instructor and students in the class and can result in the student being asked to leave the classroom. Choosing to be present and ready to learn and bring all your value to the class is a win win for everyone and avoids natural negative outcomes.
The PCC Library is available to assist you with finding, evaluating, and citing relevant research for your courses.
