This course provides an in-depth exploration of addiction to tobacco and nicotine, covering foundational concepts and evidence-based strategies that have demonstrated success in aiding individuals to overcome chewing and smoking habits. Moreover, this course incorporates innovative and unconventional quirky shifts in thinking where we value all, for example current, former and never user's insights are all needed to empower individuals who currently use to reconnect with their Baby Pink Lungs and Gums™ with the focus being on what we all stand to gain! From the immediate health impacts on all of us to the long-term potential impact on our environment we hope to ignite within all of us an urgency to be a part of The Mindful Smoking Movement for Professionals! Prerequisites: WR 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit is available.
At the conclusion of this course we will be able to achieve the following:
Increase our confidence to invite most individuals to explore relationship with tobacco/nicotine.
Heighten the urgency within us to have palpable dialogues around smoke, chew and vape.
Value the insights of current, former, and never users of these products to be resourceful authentic guides.
Masterfully gather, analyze, and interpret data to determine mild, moderate, and severe levels use.
Understand addiction specific to nicotine and tobacco, for example its impact on the brain, and add nutrition, and nature to enhance individual, group engagement and successful outcomes.
Have and deliver cutting edge information and evidence-based practices for exploring our relationships with nicotine and tobacco.
Compile strategies and practice applying these strategies to empower us all to rethink our relationships with chew, smoke, and or vape for example does understanding the differences between ceremonial vs. traditional tobacco help us?
Establish mutually safe spaces where authenticity is promoted, we are all welcomed and a predominantly gentle language is used.
Arm ourselves with a list of resources to serve as an effective referral source for individuals and groups who have a relationship with chew, smoke, and vape.
Engage in a conversation around what has been most helpful - in the past such as 12-step groups or pharmacological alternatives, and explore what else might be helpful going forward, and what do we have yet to learn.

The effects of cigarette butts and vape waste on the environment, stages of change, obstacles and myth about tobacco/nicotine cessation, the ethical issues related to excluding addiction professionals who use tobacco/nicotine or never users from the conversation, history of tobacco/nicotine use, health consequences, epidemiological data, the tobacco industry and vulnerable populations and trauma, motivational interviewing, evidence based approaches, pharmacotherapy for nicotine cessation, smoke, chew, vape and resources for tobacco/nicotine cessation including the 12 step community will be reviewed.
This class is experiential in nature and focuses on tangible practices and outcomes. With 480K people dying each year from tobacco related illnesses, it is evident that tobacco/nicotine use affects us all. This means that ALL ARE WELCOME – current users, former users, and those who have never used nicotine products. Everyone’s participation and contributions are valuable because use impacts us all and the world, and with vape products outnumbering tobacco use, vape waste is greatly impacting the world we are honored to live in. Please be prepared to share tears for lives lost and celebrate with heartfelt smiles and laughter as we work together towards empowering individuals to reconnect with their Baby Pink Lungs and Gums™ !
