Do I need a work permit?
Yes, if you are getting paid for a job through a company (EX: serving food at a restaurant, not for babysitting your neighbors cat) AND you are under 18 years of age (however, once you earn your high school diploma, you no longer need a permit if under 18 years old).
How do I request a work permit?
Follow this link for directions, but not until you have been formally offered a job. (A work permit request must include a list of duties that you will be expected to perform, so that PAUSD can confirm you will not be placed in an unsafe working condition.)
Does my manager know that they must complete the work permit?
Yes, as per California law, companies must follow this regulation, so if you are hired and they do not ask for a permit then you should initiate the B1-1 form request, or contact the Work Experience teacher for guidance.
Work Permit - FAQ List
See the CA work permit site for additional information regarding the process and law.
COVID-19 Waiver
Due to COVID-19 public health concerns, PAUSD has initiated a waiver, in addition to the work permit request. As of June 2021, PAUSD will continue to use this as part of the work permit request model.
Can my volunteer hours qualify for credit if I take Exploratory Experience?
No, you may earn either elective credit (directly added to your transcript & the teacher can add to your letter of recommendation) or volunteer hours towards the President's Award, but you may not qualify the same volunteer hours for both.
How do I get a job?
There are many resources for getting a job (see student resources page), but the most reliable ways are:
Word of mouth - ask your friend(s) if their job site is hiring
Location - find local businesses within walking/biking distance, and ask if they are hiring
Follow-up - once you submit your application, call to confirm within 48 hours that it was received by the hiring manager and ask if they are still hiring
Can I have more than 1 job?
Yes, you may have more than 1 job, but you may not exceed the hours of work for your age, and you must hold a work permit for all of the job sites (if applicable).
Hours of work
CA Dept. of Education dictates the hours a student is allowed to work, and the only flexility in this schedule (for students under 18 years of age) is if they enroll in the work experience program, then you are allowed to work more hours per week than a peer who is not enrolled in WEEP.
