The office discipline reports indicated that a large percentage of the referrals were due to Inappropriate Conduct during the 2021-2022 school year. From August 2021 to May 2022, there were a total of 537 discipline referrals submitted. Out of the 537 referrals submitted, 239 of them were related to Inappropriate Conduct/Verbal Aggression. In response to this data, the School Counselors used guidance lessons that were provided through the Second Step program. The focus was to provide 2 school-wide guidance lessons per month to target social-emotional learning in the areas of setting goals, mindsets, bullying, thoughts, emotions, relationships, and conflict resolution. School Counselors also provided counseling groups to target respectful communication skills, social norms, positive mindset, using assertiveness, and conflict resolution and reduce the number of office referrals. Our school participated in the Sandy Hook Foundation program called “Start With Hello” which comprised of classroom lessons, ice breakers, and connection activities to reduce social isolation and promote positive relationships. During the Anti-Bullying Week, school counselors organized a school-wide Kindness Challenge in which all students and staff participated. Following that, all students and staff participated in a week of “Attitude of Gratitude” activities, which is a week in November. This week focused on students being helpful, kind, and grateful to their school family and community. We evaluated the outcome of these efforts through continued monitoring of discipline data. In the Spring, the CAC evaluated the referral data. In comparison to the Fall and Spring semesters, there was a total decrease in office referrals by 10%!
