The PMHS weekly spotlight is designed to showcase standout players throughout the school year during practices. One player each week will be chosen as the Spotlight player of the week from upper class and freshmen groups.
We will also Spotlight other exciting news throughout the year in order to commemorate the memories created with Pasadena Memorial High School girls basketball program.
This past weekend was so great! The Freshman and JV both participated in the Pasadena ISD Tournament. There were 12 teams in each division and with great competition the Mavericks secured both a top 3 showing. Only losing one game the Mavericks then each won 4 games to secure a third-place plaque. The JV defeated South Houston, Dobie, and Rayburn. The JV definitely feels more confident in their preparation for the district. The Freshman team defeated South Houston, Pasadena, and Dobie helping set themselves up for a successful district season.
Varsity competed in the Lamar Consolidated Tournament. This Tournament is super unique because you play 6 games in a 3-day span. You have to be a strong team to be able to play so hard for so many games in such a short time. George Ranch was the first game that was played and the team won in dominating fashion. After the hard game, the girls played Cy Ranch, who was a great team, and gave the girls a challenge and ran away with the win. They also played Elsik, Memorial, and Friendswood. Overall the team came home with the 2nd place plaque in the Bronze bracket.
We are excited about the direction our program is heading. Can't wait to see sub-varsity continue to grow and varsity push for a district championship.
Dayami Reyes receives her letter jacket. This kid is not afraid to play! She earned her jacket playing varsity Basketball as well as soccer. As a freshman she was the little sister but now she is stepping up and getting ready to take on leadership roles.
District awards are Nominated by Coach Azul. After they are nominated by Coach Azul all the coaches must come together and vote! This year we had many coaches recognize our teams hard work.

Aubree - I want to first thank my little sister Emelia who will always be the most important person in my life. Without you, I wouldn't have made it this far. I want to thank my parents for consistently being my biggest supporters and helpers throughout this entire process and all of my family who came to watch and support me at games. Next I want to thank every teammate I ever had because in whatever way you affected me, I made it here. I'd like to thank all the coaches I've had because each individual coach brought out something in me that I didn't see in myself, so I am forever thankful for that. RJ brought out my passion and aggression. Coach Sal(Azul) taught me how to stand up for myself. And my dad taught me love for the game and how to be a good person overall. I remember I'd be so upset after games that we lost, but he would always make me laugh even though i tried my absolute hardest to stay upset. Last, but most definitely very important, I would like to thank Coach Oz and Coach T for giving me this amazing opportunity.
vs Pasadena & Deer Park
Natalie Pineda. Labeled and treated like the little sister of the team, Natalie sure didn't play that way last week. She had a big week scoring 22 points. Her scoring mainly came from the 3 point line, proving she cannot be left open. As a sharp shooter, Natalie has really focused on improving her defensive skills becoming an all around asset to the team. Natalie is only a sophomore and still getting getting better each week. Natalie is becoming a force, keep an eye out before she shoots the lights out.
vs Dobie
Gwendlyn McGrew. This kid is special. She had a solid 18 points vs a strong Dobie defense. She is averaging a double double, while leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists. A performance leader and only a sophomore, Gwen will only continue to get better. She ranked number 5 in the state for scoring. She is definitely helping Memorial get on the basketball map. Although she did not start as a point guard, she has taken on that role to help guide the team. She is an aggressive scorer and gets better distributing the ball to her team mates everyday. Gwen has the drive to make any team successful and we are glad she is a Mav. Gwen already has multiple colleges looking for her to continue her basketball career. Don't miss out watching this girl ball out!!
vs North Shore
Abigail Ramirez. Abby is a junior on the team who understands her defensive specialist role on the team. She is definitely and unsung hero. She is one of the fastest kid on the court while, her effort is unmatched. You talk about a toughness, this kid does not back down from any opponent even when they tower over her. Abby is the type of kid every coach wished they had. Against North Shore, Abby was asked to run the middle on a 1-3-1 defense. That requires her to run base line to base line to stop sharp shooters. She did that all while keeping her team in the game with multiple rebounds and steals. As he senior year quickly approaches we are looking forward to another strong season from her.
