23-24 Senior. Pineda is a 15 year old, first year varsity player. She is connect student with a 3.9 grade point average. Formally a softball player, Natalie has now put her full attention on basketball. She participate in business, which helped her attain her certification in Microsoft word. Pineda is a sharp shooter in both the classroom and well as the court. Natalie feels to improve her game she has to be able to stay positive and follow lead of teammates who are trying to help. Basketball is Natalie's greatest love. Playing the game allows her to forget all the negative around her and it brings a great joy. Natalie has grown her shooting confidence and ability by hard work, but most important the positive feedback of her teammates. They continue to acknowledge Natalie's skill and praise her for it. Pineda's teammate are very important to her especially Cassandra Perez. Natalie admires her mentality and drive, which motivates her to want to do the same. This year Natalie fought some injuries but stayed committed to the process. Next year she is looking forward to making a greater impact on the team. This kid is one that will be talked about in the future.
23-24 Senior. Perez is a 16-year-old first-year varsity player. She is currently holding a 3.9-grade point average while taking dual-language AP classes such as Spanish and culinary arts. Cassandra is known as C to her teammates and the team's protector. She makes sure no one messes with her team. Currently, C is completing driver's school, working on getting a job while emphasizing her paintwork in the postseason. Some of her goals include increasing shooting percentages and speed on the hardwood. Cassandra understands she needs to be physically strong to be a force in the paint and work to build up her skills, suck as ball handling, and especially her mentality. She believes the more she improves on her basic skills, the more her confidence will grow. Thinking she is unstoppable is half the battle. Perez has intense positive energy, and her determination on and off the court makes her an asset to her team. She is definitely the team hype "woman"! Whether on the court or on the sideline, she always makes sure she makes her teammates feel good about their own game. Sports have always been an escape for Perez, pushing her to achieve and expect more out of herself. Sports help define her strength through challenges she overcomes daily at home, school, and on the court. Simply getting to be in the gym makes her happy. Every player she plays with has a different expectation for her, which drives her to want to play harder and get better. Her teammates assist her with getting out of her comfort zone while teaching her trust in how they play. Strong women like her mother, aunts, and sisters have inspired and guided her in believing in her own capabilities no matter the obstacles. It helps to have her sister as her safe place and personal cheerleader. She continues to put my happiness above anything and everything. This kid has high expectations for herself, and we see her having a solid year!
23-24 Senior. Gwendlyn McGrew is 16 years old. She currently is in 10th grade with a GPA of 3.4. She transferred to Memorial after her freshman year. She has been on varsity for two years. Mcgrew is a standout player already being recruited by multiple colleges to play at the next level. Playing basketball is what she is known for doing, but you can catch her deep in books and passionate about anime. Gwen is a very good basketball player, who wants to improve on her defensive skills by being quicker on her feet. She also plans on increasing her vertical, to improve her abilities on the court. Although she has many strengths, one she highlights is her mental toughness and dedication to her game. She is usually the first one in the gym and the last one out. Basketball is so much fun for McGrew and she loves to play. Love and fun are what makes her so passionate and dedicated to the sport. She has played for multiple teams in her short career and states that each team has helped her become a better leader. She played at Miller Intermediate and numerous Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. She is a top Texas abd nationally ranked player with a thirst to keep getting better. Her parents are her role models. They have taught her, that as long as she puts her mind to it and works for it, everything you want is possible to achieve. Her Grandmother advised her she doesn't have to show scars from past experiences. Through her role models, Gwendlyn learned you can make a huge impact on so many people's life by just being yourself and being the best version of yourself. Gwen has 2 years left at Memorial and so much to show.
24-25 Senior. Emma Reeves is a 14-year-old, Freshman varsity athlete. Reeves currently holds a 4.9-grade point average. She is a member of the Maverick Marching band and the concert band. Emma was the only freshman who started on JV and was moved to Varsity mid-season. Currently, Reeves is nursing an injury and wants to get healthy enough to get back to work. Her short-term focus is to complete the year with good grades and get her health back in playing conditions. As a freshman, Reeves realizes she must be more vocal while getting comfortable in moving without the ball. She has been making it a priority to communicate better with her teammates and learn to be more fluid on the court while she does not have the ball in her hands. Emma acknowledges she is hard working and has a strong desire to improve. She always strives to be better and work harder than the day before. Reeves is very passionate about sports because it helps her focus. When she is playing sports, it's the only thing she thinks about. She is able to forget about everything outside the gym and just play the game. Being on other teams, Emma has learned to communicate and work hard even if others are slacking off. This freshman has picked up her work ethic from her mother, who is her role model. Her mother has shown her hard work will get her places and not never settle. Emma is always striving for more. Although she is just a freshman, she brings maturity and a desire to succeed. We are excited about her future with the program. This will definitely be a kid to keep on your radar.
