Reform (correct) problems from Gilded Age (Industrialization) such as monopolies/trusts, child labor, urbanization (overcrowding in cities caused sanitation issues) & dangerous working conditions & political corruption
Muckrakers exposed political & company corruption such as Upton Sinclair "the Jungle" exposing sanitation issues in the meatpacking industry, which will lead to more government regulation. Examples: Meat Inspection Act, Pure Food & Drug Act, Sherman Anti-Trust Act, & Interstate Commerce Act
Interstate Commerce Act - regulate railroads & their rates (break up monopolies/trusts of railroads)
Sherman & Clayton Anti-Trust Act - outlawed/prohibited monopolies/trusts
16th-income tax, 17th-direct election of senators, 18th-prohibition of alcohol, 19th-women's suffrage(right to vote) amendments & initiative, recall & referendum meant to fix societal ills & give more participation to citizens in democratic process. (meant to correct political corruption or fix societal ills)
1901 - President McKinley assassinated, Teddy Roosevelt now 26th President
1904 - Roosevelt Corollary to Monroe Doctrine - increase U.S. presence in Latin America
1906 - Muckraker - writers who expose big business & political corruption, Upton Sinclair "The Jungle"
1906 - Pure Food & Drug Act, Meat Inspection Act - set food quality standards to protect consumers
1906 - Panama Canal - connects Atlantic & Pacific Oceans to make trade more efficient (opens in 1914)
1908 - Henry Ford introduces the Model T car, assembly lines introduced (doesn't become popular until Roaring Twenties)
1913 - 16th amendment - establishment of income tax, 17th amendment - direct election of senators
1914 - World War I begins in Europe
KEY TERMS:
Progressive Movement - An early 20th century reform movement which sought to address the problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration, & political corruption. Called for new government roles & regulations, & new agencies to carry out those roles
Muckrakers - Journalists who exposed the problems of the Gilded Age; their popular books and magazine articles increased public interest in progressive reform. (example: Ida Tarbell "History of the Standard Oil Company" who exposed harmful monopolies/trusts, Upton Sinclair "The Jungle" which exposed the sanitation issues in the meat-packing industry or Ida B. Wells Anti-Lynching Campaign who advocated for equality for African Americans)
Settlement House Movement - Reform movement which provided housing in poor urban areas where volunteers would live & provide daycare, education, healthcare, etc. to those in need. Jane Addams
NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) - early civil rights group for African Americans (founded by W.E.B. DuBois) sought to end discrimination, lynching, & segregation
Lynching - Putting a person to death, especially by hanging, for an alleged offense without a legal trial
Suffrage - right to vote
Square Deal - Name given to Teddy Roosevelt's domestic programs; included conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection
Trust-Busting - Government activities aimed at breaking up monopolies & big businesses. People: Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson
Temperance - Reform movement which sought to limit - or eliminate -the consumption of alcohol based on its negative effects on people's health, personalities and family lives. Led to 18th amendment
Settlement house - movement to give shelter to poor immigrants (example: Jane Addams Hull House in Chicago which assimilated immigrants)
Meat Inspection Act - Law that established strict sanitary requirements for the meat packing industry & required frequent inspections by the federal government. Passed due to muckraker Upton Sinclair's book "The Jungle".
Pure Food & Drug Act - Law that regulated the manufacturing of food and medicines & prohibited dangerous additives & inaccurate labeling. The nation’s first consumer protection agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Passed due to muckraker Upton Sinclair's book "the Jungle".
Sherman Anti-Trust Act - prohibits monopolies
Interstate Commerce Act - regulates railroad rates (limit railroad monopolies)
16th amendment - income tax (turn 16 y/o, can get paycheck & taxes taken out)
17th amendment - direct election of senators (direct democracy to end political corruption)
18th amendment - prohibition of the sale, manufacture & transportation of alcohol (18 years old, can't drink alcohol)
19th amendment - women's right to vote/suffrage (fought for by Susan B. Anthony)
19th amendment - women's suffrage (right to vote) passed largely because of Susan B. Anthony
Jane Addams - Social Reformer who created Hull House (Settlement House) in Chicago to help assimilate new immigrants (in a good way)

DIRECT DEMOCRACY through the 17th amendment (DIRECT election of senators), recall, referendum, & initiative - meant to end political corruption & citizen's more participation in democratic process.
