Spanish American War (1898) Causes: Sinking of U.S.S. Maine & Yellow Journalism. U.S. rises to a World Power by proving we can defeat an imperial power. We acquire new territories of Guam, Puerto Rico & the Philippines.
Alfred Thayer Mahan encouraged U.S. to expand our navy (Great White Fleet) & overseas markets to become a world power.
New territories including Hawaii annexed mostly because of Sanford B. Dole overthrowing the Hawaiian Monarchy and the want for new markets for sugar and pineapple businessmen.
Panama Canal - made trade more efficient by shortening trade route between Coasts & Europe (Economic)
World War I (1914-1918) - poison gas to create a smoke screen, machine guns causes a stalemate, airplanes to spy on the enemy, and created tanks to end the stalemate and cross no man's land
Causes: M.A.N.I.A. (Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism & Assassination of Archduke of Franz Ferdinand of Austria Hungary by a Serbian Nationalist)
Causes for U.S. Abandoning Neutrality in 1917: Sinking of the Lusitania, Unrestricted submarine warfare and Zimmerman Telegram (Aggressive Actions by Germany)
Woodrow Wilson's 14 points creates the League of Nations, & Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for war & made them pay reparations. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge encouraged U.S not to join League of Nations.
1901 - President McKinley assassinated, Teddy Roosevelt now 26th President
1904 - Roosevelt Corollary to Monroe Doctrine - increase U.S. presence in Latin America "international police power"
1906 - Panama Canal - connects Atlantic & Pacific Oceans to make trade more efficient (opens in 1914)
Woodrow Wilson wins reelection on campaign of keeping U.S. Neutral during World War I
World War I - bloodiest war in world history to date, aka "The Great War", "The War to End All Wars"
1915 - German U-boats sinks British passenger liner Lusitania, 128 Americans killed on board
1917 - Germany continues unrestricted submarine warfare - gets warning from U.S.
1917 - Zimmerman Telegram - intercepted by British, asks for Germany/Mexico Alliance against U.S.; U.S. Enters World War I
1917 - Selective Service Act - establishes the draft (conscription) to enlarge U.S. military
1918 - Fourteen Points - by Woodrow Wilson, 14th point most important calls for a League of Nations
1919 - Treaty of Versailles - ends World War I; calls for heavy reparations on Germany, disarmament and creation of League of Nations; U.S. Senate rejects joining the League of Nations due to Henry Lodge - U.S. return to isolationism

Imperialism - Expanding a nation by influencing militarily or economically or buying land from another country. Reasons: Desire for Military Strength, Thirst for New Markets, Belief in Cultural Superiority
Yellow Journalism - Journalism that exploits, distorts, or exaggerates the news to create sensations & attract readers. Cause of the Spanish-American War in 1898. People: William R. Hearst & Joseph Pulitzer
USS Maine - U.S. battleship that exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba killing 268 men; American newspapers & the United States Naval Court of Inquiry blamed a Spanish mine; led to a declaration of war against Spain in 1898.
Great White Fleet - Name for the steam-powered ships of the enlarged & modernized American Navy of the early 1900s. Mostly due to Alfred Thayer Mayan's book "The Influence of Sea Power" advocating for a strong Navy
Annexation - *add* transfer of political sovereignty over a chunk of land to a new state. It's just one way that nations can grow. Example: Annexation of Hawaii by Sanford B. Dole who overthrows monarchy
Treaty of Paris 1898 - Treaty ending the Spanish-American War; Spain granted independence to Cuba, ceded Puerto Rico & Guam to the U.S., and sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.
Innovation - a new method, idea, product, etc.
Trench Warfare - artillery & machine guns forced the armies on the Western Front to dig trenches to protect themselves.
Isolationism - a policy of noninvolvement in the affairs of other nations.
Neutrality - Foreign policy position where a state intends to remain neutral & not take a side in conflict
World Power - a country that has significant influence in international affairs. *U.S. as of 1898*
Stalemate - A situation in which neither side can win a clear victory. Trench warfare led to this.
Open Door Policy - U.S. policy of promoting equal opportunity for international trade & commerce in China, & respect for China's administrative & territorial integrity. People: President McKinley & John Hay
Dollar Diplomacy - President Taft's policy of building strong economic ties to Latin America by loaning them money.
Anti-Imperialist League - formed in 1898 to oppose the U.S. annexation of the Philippines; claimed that imperialism violated the fundamental principle that just republican government must derive from "consent of the governed." They are why we did not join the League of Nations after World War I.
1898 - Turning point for U.S. We become a world/imperial power. Wins the Spanish American war & got 3 new territories (new markets/naval bases) & Dole gets U.S. to annex (add) Hawaii.
Alliances in Europe. One of the causes for the outbreak of World War I in Europe in 1914. Allies - GB, France, Russia, and U.S. Central Powers - Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary & Germany.
Trench warfare in world war I caused by machine guns which led to a stalemate (no progress on either side). Tanks were developed to break the stalemate and end the war.
Panama Canal - made trading with other coasts & countries quicker & more efficient but building it was difficult because of the tropical climate (mosquitos, yellow fever, etc.)
