Program Curriculum Content Area: Personal Health & Safety
At Jessup Elementary, the counseling program addresses Personal Health & Safety through the Stand Strong/Stay Safe curriculum, designed to teach students self-advocacy, recognizing unsafe situations, and developing strategies to protect themselves. Lessons were delivered 4 times for PreK–2 and 5 times for grades 3–4, with 2 sessions in the first semester and 2–3 in the second semester. Students requiring additional support participated in follow-up small groups, and family extension activities were sent home to reinforce learning.
Implementation is strengthened through collaboration with 30 teachers, who provided classroom insight and supported lesson delivery. All parents received extension materials to reinforce lessons at home. Community partners, including WAVE Clinic, VOCA, TCHATT, and CIS, provided follow-up supports for students needing additional intervention.
Data from the School Climate Survey, behavior referrals, and teacher observations informed lesson planning, highlighting needs for improved peer relationships, personal safety, and advocacy skills. The program contributed to measurable improvements in students’ personal safety awareness and peer interactions, supporting the school’s broader goals of social-emotional growth, positive behavior, and a safe, inclusive campus environment.
Assertiveness (Stand Strong/Stay Safe)
Content Area: Personal Health & Safety
Student Competency: Students demonstrate knowledge of personal safety and self-advocacy by identifying unsafe situations and using assertive communication.
Goal: Students will define assertiveness and practice assertive body language, tone of voice, and words to stay safe and seek help when needed.
Analysis of the School Climate Survey revealed a clear need for increased behavior supports, improved peer relationships, fostering respect, enhancing safety, and encouraging students to advocate for help.
The school counselor collaborates with teachers, staff, parents, and community partners to ensure that each guidance content area is fully addressed. Teachers provide classroom insights, identify students in need, and support lesson delivery, reinforcing learning in daily routines. Parents receive extension activities and resources to practice skills at home, promoting consistency between school and home environments.
Community partners, including WAVE Clinic, VOCA, TCHATT, and CIS, provide follow-up supports for students requiring mental health, safety, or social-emotional interventions. Through this coordinated approach, lessons in Personal Health & Safety, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Effectiveness, and Postsecondary Planning & Career Readiness are reinforced across multiple contexts. This collaboration ensures that all students develop critical social-emotional skills, build personal safety awareness, and are prepared for academic and life success, while fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
