In this unit, students will work in groups to devise a health promotion strategy for a health issue of significance to young people. Students will develop skills needed to plan, apply and evaluate their strategy, and present their findings to the class.
Students will aim to address the following driving question:
What actions are required to improve the health of young people?
Students will investigate:
trends and health statistics to determine health priority areas for young people
the influences on health decision making
risk factors that increase an individual's likelihood of disease or injury
protective factors that reduce an individual's risk of disease or injury
use the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals to develop an effective health promotion campaign
In this task you will be assessed on your ability to:
investigate one health issue that affects young people
apply the skills of critique and analysis to the chosen issue
propose, plan and create a health campaign
The content will be delivered using a Flipped Learning approach as well adopting elements of Project Based Learning.
Flipped Learning is a strategy where students are required to either watch a video or complete a reading along with a quiz prior to attending class. Completing these videos or readings prior to class allows the teacher to work on more complex activities in class that extend upon the student's prior knowledge. In other words, a flipped classroom is one where students are introduced to content at home, and practice working through it at school. The benefits for you, the student, are many, including:
More time in class to interact with your teacher - receiving feedback, asking questions refining skills and clarifying the content
Exposure to more challenging work, which will help you to improve at a much faster rate
Developing independent learning skills and greater responsibility for your learning
A more active classroom, rather than passive, where you are able to participate in discussions, debates, peer learning and teaching and inquiring more deeply into your work.
An organised collection of resources, such as videos and readings, that you can access at any time. This collection of resources allows you to see the end point in the unit, plan your learning and allow you to set goals.
