Advocacy: Public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy
Health promotion: The process of enabling people to increase control over the determinants of health and thereby improve their health. This definition comes from on the World Health Organisation Ottawa Charter 1986.
Empower: To give (someone) the power to do something, make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.
Individual factors: The individual factors that determine health are factors identified within an individual, including: attitudes, knowledge, skills, genetics, and personal characteristics.
Socioeconomic factors: Factors relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors, including employment, education, and income.
Environmental factors: The natural and built environment factors that affect health. Environmental factors include not just geographical location but also access to health services and technology.
Sociocultural factors: Relate to society (socio) and culture (cultural). Within society and culture, factors that determine health include family, peers, media, gender, culture and religion
Risk factor: A risk factor is any attribute, characteristic or exposure of an individual that increases the likelihood of developing a disease or injury.
Protective factor: Factors that enhance the likelihood of positive health outcomes and lessen the likelihood of negative health consequences from exposure to risk
