Blue is introduced as the main character and talks about life in cicada Hive, Guards, rules, and the hierarchy of the hives, hivewings are the rulers, and silkwings are monitored and controlled by their wristbands.  his older sister is going into her metamorphosis today, Where she will spin a silk cocoon and grow her wings inside much like a butterfly, they go to get her food and hang out on her last days as a dragonet. They then go out to a fancy candy store to buy his sister some honey candy called honeydrops.

Blue and Luna go to the mosaic garden, a huge garden at the top of the hive to eat the candy, But something is off with Luna’s wrists, they are glowing and vibrating like blue has never seen. They both get nervous and hurry to the cocoon.

Blue gets worried because swordtail, luna’s boyfriend, keeps whispering about some rare “thing” but no one will tell him what it is. Then something goes wrong, instead of white silk, luna shoots out flaming strands! Io tells Blue that this is called flaimsilk as luna is surrounded and taken. Io tries to escape with blue by climbing up the webs but loses blue at a hivewing school, but suddenly all the hivewings eyes go blank and they speak and move in unison as if they were one mind.

Blue wakes up in a cramped tunnel, he can see as guards move through the library through a small hole in the wall. Cricket is still with him and after the guards leave the library they decide to try to find swordtail to help them escape. However, swordtail is in Misbehavers Way and blues rulefallower instinct makes him hesitant to break him out which causes a delay in getting him. Misbehavers Way is where troublemakers are paralyzed and put on display for a day, unable to move. Cricket helps paint blue so no one will recognize him and finds a serum used of plants and decided to try it on swordtail to break him out.

After blue made sure the coast was clear, they worked their way down to misbehavers way where the found swordtail. Cricket tried the toxin on him and it worked, however it also seemed to give him a strange amount of strength and stamina. Blue explained what had happened and swordtail decided to carry blue out of the hive towards the open savanna to hide.

The next  night when blue wakes up and they decide to continue their Journey at night so the hivewings don't find them, however swordtails super strength has worn off and he is unable to carry Blue out of the cave. blue hast to climb out of the hole, however they are far down and it takes 2 days to get back up. They then begin their Journey towards wasp Hive to try and find where they took Luna. they find large greenhouses outside of the hive and to avoid getting caught they enter a greenhouse marked do not enter. however well exploring it they are captured by Three Dragons but not just any dragons, leafwings! 

Three three leaf Wings two adults and one child about Blues age have them captured inside of the greenhouse. the leave Wings ask blue and Cricket lots of questions and blue tells them that he is looking for the  flame silk cave the leaf wings say that they know where the the flame wink is, however to show them where it is they first have to help them steal the book of Clear Sight.  blues is hesitant about breaking the rules but it is overwhelmed by his need to find his sister, he and Cricket decide to try and Escape before they steal the book and agree to the leaf Wings plan.

The plan falls apart however when one of the leaf wings,  Sundoo the younger one decides to come with them to go to the temple They have to disguise themselves before sneaking up to the guards and knocking them out with a sleeping flower that son do has pulled from her pouch. They soon arrive at the Temple of Clear Sight where the book is held. A large Library filled with books. Blue is about to try and turn sundew in hoping that wasp will let him go if he does, but Sundew uses a blow dart to paralyze the guards in place allowing them to slip by unnoticed and unable to talk to them. They pass through into a second smaller chamber and use the same blow dart to slip past those guards. However when they get to the chamber where the book of clear site is held, the librarian steps out from behind the podium to stop them.

The Librarians eyes are white showing that queen wasp is inside of her. She tries to stop them and she and son do get into an intense fight. In the tussle the librarian's key falls off and blue takes it to unlock the cover of the book, the book is not fancy nor does it have any gold on it it is tarnished with a faded blue cover nothing like how the high winds describe it. Sundew uses a bullet ant to cause the librarian enough pain that queen wasp gets out of her mind.  the librarian tells them that queen wasp is always inside of her so that she does not reveal the book secrets the librarian then gives them the book and shows them a secret exit to escape.But when they are trying to escape queen wasp finds them again and summons the entire Hive to chase them down blue gives Cricket the book and falls down into the swarm of high wings so that her friends can escape with it.

Blue is dragged down the tunnels to an underground Cavern Phillips loving cauldrons and other silkwings on Rocky ledges above them. He sees Luna's cocoon and makes this way towards it where is his father, Admiral is waiting for him. Admiral tells him about how the flamesilks take turns filling the cauldrons with their fiery silk to try and meet the quota. all of the other flamesilks argue about who blue should be friends with. While they spiral into ther fight, blue goes around the edges of the cave trying to find a way out but to no avail.

Luna hatches out of the cocoon with her new wings and blue explains everything that happened recently, Luna decides to help try to escape. blue searches around the rock walls while luna distracts admiral. After searching for a long time he finds a small hole and hears his friends calling to him. They have used the tunnels that the leaf Wings built to try and get into wasp High and blue goes to tell Luna but when his dad finds out he tries to get the guards to stop them. however he starts arguing with the other silk wings and in all the chaos they are able to slip away through the narrow hole.

After blue and the others exit the tunnel there on the coast Cricket shows blue the inside of the book of Clear Sight and it is nothing like he expected the last prophecy was over a thousand years ago and it says nothing of the other tribes needing to bow down to the hivewings. However they are ambushed by hivewings on the coast. cricket takes blue and flees into the caves. however luna, while trying to use her flamesilk against the guards, she gets caught in the storm and blown out to sea leaving swordtail flying after her and sundo fighting the guards alone. as blue is dragged into the cave by Cricket he begins to lose consciousness however as he enters his metamorphosis he knows that he has to do something about queen wasp and finally accepts his fate.
