School Colors: Red, White, and Blue

 

 

A+ Program – Qualified students who participate in the A+ Program during their high school career may receive scholarship funds to attend participating public community colleges or vocational/technical schools.  In addition, many four-year colleges provide incentives to A+ eligible students.  For more information, visit the Counseling tab, select A+ program from the dropdown. 

 

Advanced Placement Classes – Students are encouraged to take at least one Advanced Placement class during their time in High School. A.P. Classes are entry level college classes in which students have the opportunity to earn college credits. 

 

Blood Drives – Student Activities works with Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center collecting blood donations during the fall and spring.

 

Concerts – The band, orchestra, chorus, and several musical groups perform throughout the year with music ranging from classical to jazz and pop concerts.

 

Fine Arts Fairs – Each year South students display artwork at the South Area Art Show and at Parkway's All-District Art Show at Queeny Park.

 

Graduation – The commencement ceremony is a dignified recognition of students who have achieved a specific set of criteria as outlined by the Parkway Board of Education and the State of Missouri.

 

Homecoming – The pep rally, football game, and dance are part of a customary "Spirit Week" held each fall.

 

Honors Evening – This is a ceremony during which students are recognized for academic and character accomplishments, including Cum Laude Honors.  Graduates receiving honors are invited to attend.

 

Open House – Early in the school year South High parents are invited to meet the faculty and to visit classrooms. This event is hosted by PTO.

 

Parent/Teacher Conferences – Parents can meet briefly with their students’ teachers during parent/teacher conferences.

 

Pat on the Back Students and staff members recognize one another for their contributions to South High.

 

Patriot Pass – Seniors with 17 credits can apply to receive out-to-lunch privileges with their Administrator’s endorsement of grades, citizenship and attendance.

 

Patriot Representatives – South students and staff acknowledge educational achievements, outstanding contributions, and citizenship of fellow students and staff members.

 

Prom – The Junior Class hosts the Senior Class for the formal dinner-dance in the spring.

 

Semester Finals At the end of each semester, students engage in culminating class exercises such as exams, presentations or class projects.

 

Senior Activities - Traditionally, seniors who are eligible to walk in the graduation ceremonies may participate in activities planned by class officers to promote lasting friendships among classmates. 

 

Service Activities - Each class supports a service project to assist the community, such as the canned food drive and the senior citizens’ dance.  South students also organize and conduct a Special Olympics each year and assist with Sixth Grade Camp.

 

South Star Award Each semester staff members recognize students for citizenship and contributions to their classrooms. 

 

Spirit Night At the beginning of the school year, the Athletics Dept.  sponsors a pep rally and barbecue; and also showcases sports teams and performance groups for families, students, and community members.

 

Stage Productions – South students star in comedies and dramas each fall and spring.  Every other year students produce a musical.  Senior student’s direct studio showcase performances in the spring.

 


Spirit of Excellence: Spirit of Excellence is a Parkway School District awards ceremony that                      honors students of African-American descent in grades 3-12 who have excelled academically. More                    information can be found here.
