Motifs
Some of the themes I identified were
Equality
Jealousy
Friendship
Familiy
Confidence
One of the biggest motifs is confidence. August has to learn to have confidence in himself. Despite being bullied so many times and having many people staring at him, he has to believe that he belongs. And ignore what other people say.
Themes
Don’t judge someone just because of what they look like
Be confident.
Put yourself out there, and make friends
Spend time with your family; they don't last forever
Choose kindness
CERERC
In the novel Wonder, the theme is that people should stop wishing they were "normal" and instead embrace who they are with confidence. Early in the story, Auggie struggles when meeting his principal, he avoids talking as much as possible, muttering, “Hi, I said, looking down” (22). Because he hides from others, trying to blend in, he lacks confidence on his first day of school. If Auggie had focused on making friends early on rather than hiding, he would have felt less isolated and moreconfident. By the end of the book, Auggie has a big transformation. During a nature retreat, he bravely stands his ground against older bullies (269). Because he doesn't let fear control him, he proves he is no longer ashamed of himself. This act shows the self-confidence he has now, which earns him the respect of his peers. In conclusion, the theme of “Wonder” is, stop spending time wishing you were normal, be confident of who you are.
