Chapter summaries

Alexis and her sister are taking photos outside of their home. Her sister notices a strange light coming from behind the house. Alexis already notices but doesn't want to freak out her sister. Then it becomes obvious it's coming towards them and they run into the house, worried. Alexis isn't very popular at school. Well at least in these chapters she seemed like a loaner. Her friend like forever only talks about herself. Some girls she calls “The Doom Squad” bully her and Lydia, the head of it, is always rude to her. Then she meets this sweet guy named Carter. He has pretty blue eyes and blonde hair. They meet when he accidentally hits Alexis in her head. He introduces himself and helps her get to the nurse. Carter talks to Alexis while they wait for the nurse to come and she has a bad attitude. Alexis thinks he's only trying to show off to her and make himself look good, which is why she calls him a politician. When the nurse comes Alexis tells Carter to leave in a stern voice. Was this all just because of a bad first impression?

Alexis used to be on this show named Surrey Survey which was show for only kids at her school. She was on there, cursed, and talked very honestly (but rudely) about her school. Kids started to hate her and that pretty much made her lose the only friends she had. Carter rides Alexis home and she still has a bad attitude on the way home. When Carter sees her house he's amazed and talks about how wonderful it is. Alexis has never gotten compliments on her house, but it is colorful. At dinner, Kasey gets upset and runs out of the kitchen. Alexis follows after her and she goes into the basement where no one ever dares to go in. She calls Kasey crazy and Kasey runs out again and screams at Alexis. Alexis was awake all night thinking about it.

Alexis tries to talk to Kasey but she is avoiding her. She finds her and Kasey asks her to tell her a story. The girl in the story's eyes were green. Alexis stops the story and Kasey begs for more. Alexis declines and the power goes out. They grab flashlights and Alexis can't seem to find Kasey or the power box. She flashed the light in Kasey's face, and in a split second, she saw her. Her eyes go green, but her eyes are naturally blue. Alexis thinks she losing her mind!  The stove lights up on its own during breakfast. Yet Kasey seems to be there when all the weird stuff happens. Alexis thinks it's her but Kasey intends its Alexis.

Alexis goes into the library and sees carter and he says he can leave. She insists he stays. Carter says the first time he ever saw her was on the tv show that made everyone hate her. Alexis tells carter that she cant be her with him being him. She hates when people try to hard and just wants him to be honest because she feels like he's only doing this to make himself look better. She picks up her backpack to leave then carter expresses how he tried to kill himself last year. Alexis drops her bag and feels horrible. He explains how he has only told her. Alexis feels bad and realizes she was his biggest inspiration all this time. She tells him how she takes photographs in a “darkroom” in her house. Later she rushed into the hall when the “Doom Squad” tells her that her dad has been in a accident.

Alexis realizes her father has been in an accident and has been taken to the hospital. Her neighbor picks her and her sister up. Carter meets Kasey and Kasey seems to like him. They meet their mom and go home. The AC is on and her mom NEVER leaves it on. Alexis turns it off, then it turns back on and gets colder and colder every time. She starts to see random footprints around the house which freaks her out thinking it's her sister creeping around the house. Alexis also notices her yearbook is missing from her organized drawers and she finds it in Kasey's room. Some girls in the Doom Squad have X’s on their pictures. Alexis gets upset and heads back into the kitchen when she notices red marks on her arms. Then Kasey comes in and hits herself with the door, and screams. Alexis is confused when she collapses to the floor and Kasey screams how Alexis hit her. Their mom gets upset and walks away with Kasey, but her eyes go green again. Alexis is upset and freaked out. The next day a girl named Megan Wiley tells her about her sister. When Kasey touched Alexis’s arm that morning, shortly after she had red scratches on her arm. Alexis defends her sister and says things about Megan's mom and tells her to stay out of her life. Everyone gets shocked and thinks Alexis is calling for attention. Her mom calls the office and tells Alexis her dad is fine and the brakes to his car were not messed with (Kasey admitted to having something to do with it)

Alexis comes home and calls Kasey's school and she is marked “present” Later Alexis goes to look for the stolen reports in Kasey's room and she's in there. Kasey admits that things are weird and that people can just listen to her. Kasey called her school and asked to be marked present. And she was. She called the officers and told them to say there was nothing wrong with the brakes and they were not messed with. Alexis gets confused now that Kasey is spilling this to her. Then Kasey starts talking about her new “friend” she made. Alexis starts to connect the dots and that her “friend” is possessing her. Alexis finds out Kasey saved her because she was going to get pressed charges. After all, it got blamed on her about the brakes. Alexis asks who did it and Kasey says it was her friend. Kasey gives her all these innocent looks like she's not the monster, then locks Alexis in her room. With her dolls she collects. Alexis cries and decides to go talk to Megan. Alexis and Megan now join together to find out what's wrong with Kasey.

When Megan and Alexis get to the house, Megan hears voices in her head saying “Sarah”. Sarah is saying how much she hates Megan and is angry at her. Megan passes out and Alexis worries. She gets her out of the house and Megan is terrified of the evil inside. Alexis runs into her neighbor's house and the old lady explains how no one has lived there for a long time…. Like in the 1900’s. She also tells Alexis that someone died in her house and attempted to kill her own child. The child later was found out as Megan while to research at the library. Megan is heartbroken about someone she thought loved her so much hated her. And her grandma lied about her death!  Alexis comes back to Mary's house (the old lady) and learns more about Shara and her past. Mary is cousins with the librarian. Sarah, who lived in the house before Shara and Megan, fell off a tree and died. Sarah is the one haunting Kasey. And trying to get revenge on anyone who lives in that house.

Alexis goes back to the library on her own time and steals more microfiche. Her research is connecting all the dots about her sister. Mary has given her a lot of information that she needs. Alexis tells Carter that she's not going to the dance with him. She's very busy and she feels horrible. Carter tries to tell her he's here and would love to go with her, but Alexis refuses. She tells him to go with Pepper, a girl that likes her. Carter feels upset and confused about why she's doing this, (they haven't talked in a while).  Alexis feels bad but she's so focused and everything else she can't focus on the people that have helped her through this. She goes home and after and looks through her attic (that he never knew she even had) and finds a half of a heart necklace. Alexis immediately notices it from Megan. She wears it every day. 

Kasey is inside the house and she knows Alexis is there. Alexis doesn't know Kasey’s there. Alexis goes into Kasey's room and looks around to know what she's up to. She's been out everywhere and not been herself. Kasey enters the room and finds Alexis. She gets angry at her for snooping in her room. Soon, Alexis sees her eyes turn green and starts choking her. Alexis feels faint and fiddles with her heart necklace and Kasey steps back and falls. Alexis passes out and has a sudden dream. She sees Shara and little Megan in their kitchen. In Shara's pov, there are sudden voices in her head telling her to do things she shouldn't. Shara can't take the pressure and does everything the voice is saying even when it's causing her daughter stress and sadness. The voice wants Shara to kill Megan. Shara can't and locks Megan out of the house. The voice gets angry and sets the kitchen on fire and Shara dies a horrible death. Alexis is woken up by her mom's knock. She doesn't make eye contact and wishes her mom goodbye. Alexis goes into the bathroom and sees 2 black eyes and scratches on her face. She goes to school anyway because she needs to save Megan and everyone on the list for Kasey to kill. Kasey meets her at the door. And before Alexis leaves, Kasey says that Alexis will be dead before she can come back or save Megan. Alexis runs out the door and ignores her even though it bothers her too much. She makes it to school in time for the parade they're having. Alexis looks all around for Megan but instead, she finds Kasey coming up the street. Alexis runs and finds Megan on the float. Alexis screams and tells her all that happened. They don't have much time. Before they can leave the float tips over and the cheerleaders all holding on for dear life screaming. People come to help and Megan and Alexis run. Kasey did it.

Alexis and Megan get a ride from Carter to Alexis's house. Carter is still very concerned about Alexis. Alexis explains that she goes to the dance with him and tells him everything later. When they enter the house, Alexis tells Megan about the heart. She found the other half and it sometimes helps her not get haunted and killed by Kasey. The spirit is afraid of it. They look all around Kasey's room for where the spirit could be. They beak all her dolls and don't find anything. Kasey enters the room and gets upset again. She chokes Alexis and throws Megan to the wall. Alexis was paralyzed so she couldn't save Megan. Megan slowly slips away as she's getting choked by Kasey. Carter enters the house and Kasey; Let's go on Megan and heads over to Carter. Her eyes keep flashing green and Carter passes out. Alexis is angry and horrified. Megan scoots over and shows Alexis the heart they clash their heart together and a blue big light comes out and breaks the spirit. Kasey's eyes go blue and she finally falls to the ground. And the spirit goes into the attic. Kasey feels confused and shattered by what happened. The kitchen catches on fire and the house goes into flames. Alexis runs into the attic and finds the doll. The doll starts getting voices in her head that she should kill Kasey so she can know what she's done. It's trying to curse her. Alexis snaps out of it and breaks the doll. Yet she used up too much time and the flames were catching up. She had to jump out the window. Alexis jumps and makes it into the tree. The top of the tree is nearly on fire so she jumps to a small branch and it breaks. She breaks a lot of bones but over the next 8 months she is fully healed and the house is now on the market. She caught up with all her friends but her sister, Kasey got sent to a mental school by her parents. Carter finally takes her to the dance and they finally get into a relationship.
