At the very beginning of the story, Gerta, Fritz and Dominic didn't always get along perfectly and most of the time they were annoyed at each other like any other normal siblings would do. They would argue over food in their kitchen setting and do what the others did just to drive each other insane. On page 4 it states, "Fritz and Dominic were debating over who got the last dumpling, the oldest or the hungriest." This is something any sibling would do to the other just to annoy them, have an excuse to argue with them, or even to get them in trouble if they give them what they wanted.

In this case the two characters, Gerta and Fritz didn't realize that they loved each other, Dominic and papa so much until the Berlin wall was put up and separated their family in 1961. this made both Gerta and Fritz feel more of a connection to Dominic and papa and eager to be with them. On page 12, Gerta thought, "Worst of all, the day that separated my family." Gerta is remembering how much she cares about her family now that the wall has been put up between them. She shows her emotions by feeling sad and lonely and also crying. This moment changed Gerta and Fritz by making their love for Dominic and papa grow stronger.

Therefore when Gerta, Fritz and Dominic learned the theme, that people should never give up on their families, the reader learned it also.
